Thought I had a Tiger Shovelnose? Am I wrong?

Post by steelwolve »

Hi I just found this site and was checking it out. Very Cool. I was a avid catch and release catfish angler for years. In Ohio I maninly caught channel cats, and the occasional Flathead. A couple years ago when my second daughter was born my fishing time was pretty much eliminated. So I started keeping fish tanks. I had a couple of pictus in a 20 gallon for about a year when they died due to a failed heater x( . Then I got my 90G setup and added what I thought was a Tiger Shovelnose? With 2 heaters :-BD Ive had him for about a year now and he has really been growing. Hes now been living with my attempt at a planted tank. I have been on the plantedtank.net site alot lately. They have been great at helping me add the right plants, and keep em alive.
I look forward to checking out this forum and chatting with some fellow Catfish lovers
So back to the ID heres the Pics

I'm not sure exactly what you have but it's not a TSN. It's not a Lima either. Almost looks like a RTC x Shovelnose hybrid but I'm not sure about that. Sorry I could not give you a positive ID.

Yep, that's a TSN x RTC.

Awesome. :d Thanks for the quick replys. I actually went to buy a RTC
(I think that means RED TAIL CATFISH) but they only had this guy. He was very cool looking, and I loved his color. So he came home with me. Anyways he's grown from 4" to almost 7.5" in the 11 months hes been with me. He loves frozen bloodworms and ghost shrimp, as treats and Ciclid pellets are his every other day food. How big do the X breeds usually get? I know one day I will have to get a bigger tank but for now he seems quite happy in my 90Gallon. Do you think once bigger he will lose spots and get a tiger pattern?

They should get approximately as large as the TSN and the RTC. The Cat-eLog lists about 43", not including the tail fin. All hybrids I've ever see have spots or spots connecting, but never full on stripes; then again, I haven't seen all that many.

That is one nice looking fish & is going to be one BIG fish. You could do some catch & release fishing from the comfort of your lounger, just toss a rod & lure in the tank & have some fun, plus you wouldn't have to buy a liscence...lol. :))

Welcome to the forum, mate!

I spent my first 5 years in the US in Bowling Green, OH. Yeah, lots of channels and bullheads but never a flattie for me.

Yes, this is not a TSN but a man-made (mainly for food) hybrid TSN x RTC.

I hope you know what you are getting into wanting to keep 4’-5’ catfishes. They need a tropical swimming pool for a home when adults and their natural lifespan is 25-50 years. No big tank will suffice – we are talking a public aquarium exhibit scale. So, realistically, one is looking to spend like $10,000-$20,000 on his pond with a window (surely can be done on a far smaller budget but DIY; or without a viewing window, etc.) and around $20,000 and more on heating, maintenance, food, etc. over a life span. Only die-hard fish fanatics are capable of such committments.

RTC and a TSN and TSN x RTC normally attain 2’ in their 1st year of life; 3’ in 2 years; 4’ in 4-5 years. Something is seriously wrong with yours, which is also evident from the pics – his head is 1.5 times disproportionately bigger than it should be for his body. It may be stunting or a deformity but I don’t think so as a first guess. If I had to guess, I’d either say he eats about 5x-10x less than norm or he has intestinal parasites that suck the life out of him.

He will never lose the spots. Google TSN x RTC and click on images.

Hi and thanks for the replys,
Viktor, you say that this fish normaly grows to 2' (thats 2 feet!) in 1 year? Wow, that seems crazy to me. Is this growth in an aquarium? My guy is fed every other day with cichlid pellets. Then once a month I buy 24 ghost shrimps he eats them all in about a week and then once a week he gets a frozen bloodworm pellet. I thought I may be overfeeding him?? Now I wonder if hes starving. Man no I had no idea that he was supposed to get that big that fast. I was told my 90g should last him 5-10yrs and then I was gonna get a 220 or bigger. Now it sounds like I may have an issue. On the parisite theory, he shows no signs of them, and besides swallowing a shiny rock my daughter put in the tank, that he spit up a week later, has been a very active, fun, and cool looking fish IMO. I hope I may have gotten a dwarf, lol, if thats possible. Cause I would hate to have to eat him if he got too big! (Just kidding :d although I eat catfish I know not to eat fish from an aquarium due to dosing water)
I see how my owning him could be controversial, But keeping any fish in a bowl or tank could be controversial to some. I mean no harm and just loved the way the fish looked. I hope I can give him a happy life but if he gets to 4' in 3 years I dont know what Ill do #-O

SW: Viktor, you say that this fish normaly grows to 2' (thats 2 feet!) in 1 year? Wow, that seems crazy to me. Is this growth in an aquarium?
VJ: Yes, 1.5'-2.5' in the 1st year in an aquarium, more or less properly sized one. It can stunt some in too small a tank. This fish is very far from being alone in growing so fast. Both his parents do. Many, many other big catfish and other fish can be named from diverse families. E.g., channels hit 1.5' in the 1st year on the fish farms and in favorable wild conditions.

SW: My guy is fed every other day with cichlid pellets. Then once a month I buy 24 ghost shrimps he eats them all in about a week and then once a week he gets a frozen bloodworm pellet. I thought I may be overfeeding him?? Now I wonder if hes starving.
VJ: I think he is underfed but before you (if you decide) start feeding him more, think through and increase the bio-filtration. Returning him to the store and making them aware of the poor advice they gave you is another option, IMO.

SW: Man no I had no idea that he was supposed to get that big that fast. I was told my 90g should last him 5-10yrs and then I was gonna get a 220 or bigger.
VJ: No surprise, sadly. This happens left and right. I hope it was just a case of either ignorance and/or wrong ID, not malicous sale practice.

SW: Now it sounds like I may have an issue. On the parisite theory, he shows no signs of them, and besides swallowing a shiny rock my daughter put in the tank, that he spit up a week later, has been a very active, fun, and cool looking fish IMO.
VJ: Good.

SW: I hope I may have gotten a dwarf, lol, if thats possible.
VJ: There are no dwarfs in his kind. They are a product of careful research to produce a food fish that grows the fastest and biggest.

SW: Cause I would hate to have to eat him if he got too big! (Just kidding :d although I eat catfish I know not to eat fish from an aquarium due to dosing water)
VJ: :) This is not the only reason I'd not eat my (dead) pet. :)

SW: I see how my owning him could be controversial, But keeping any fish in a bowl or tank could be controversial to some.
VJ: Yep, but as often, the extrimist views are rarely right.

SW: I mean no harm and just loved the way the fish looked. I hope I can give him a happy life but if he gets to 4' in 3 years I dont know what Ill do #-O
VJ: No one in their right state of mind would say your intentions were wrong - you thought you were buying a hamster who turned out to be a bear... but past is past, cannot be changed, future can be - now that you know you have to put together a viable plan. Also, usually with the right fish ID, one hour on Google (or one search/posted question on a forum like PlanetCatfish etc.) is enough prep to know at least the basics of what one is getting into.

I can't take credit for it.

It's from an old Russian anectode/joke: a guy's walking around a flee market (a common place in Russia to buy pets from private owners) with a big bear on a thick chain. As people around turn the whiter shade of pale, they ask him what in the world he is doing. He replies "I am looking for a guy who sold me a hamster last year."
