Post by Amazon Pleco »

Hi Guys,

Im planning to get some polypterus endlicheri Small for my tank with my small Panaques. The size fits both. But does anyone know if it would be a problem.

Tank size: 375 Liters (150x50x50)
Loads of driftwood
Dimmed ligths
Fine sand
Hi cirkulation

Hope to learn something today.

Cheers

I've heard plecs will rasp on bichirs, so I've never tried it.

Yes I have read something about that problem. Thing it is a rare behavior and not confirmed. The pleco is a cornivore and for it to enjoy slimecoat seems strange to me :-O

The problem isn't the plecos.

Those endlis grow real fast and are very aggressive.
They try to eat anything that fits in their mouth. They also do death rolls like crocs and gators to rip off chunks.
They will out grow the Panaque in no time if they're healthy and kept well.

Ive never seen a mark or injury on the Senegal my brother has been keeping for 10+ years with various types of plecos mostly panaque.

Hi Megacat

Ok. This is noted. Personally I dont have that expirience of the Bikirs but ok there can be difference in variants.

I can move the Panaques until they are grown up. I have to keep a god eye on all fish in my tank due to the divers challenges

Thanks for the advise mate

I personally have never had any except for a lapradei and it was very docile just like most senegals.

My brother had a large group of endlis they were constantly on the hunt and they were mean.
He lost a few fish to them of almost equal size.
I'm not saying all of them are like this aggression can vary.

I'm positive though that the panaque won't eat their slime coat.

Keep an eye on them and keep them full :)

Thanks. b-)

It´s a funny thing with fish. Some of them are just crazy and very difficult to keep. I have loads of experience on predatory fishes for Lake Malawi and Tanganyika. Some can keep a predator and some cant. It is not always the owner that screws it up, sometimes it is just a crazy fish

I have made the decision in the name of science, and hobby experience, to try the experience and separate them if there are any signs of trouble.

I will make an update every 3 months in this thread with pictures ect.

I'm not a big fan mixing fish from different parts of the world...at the end you're tank will be way to small so why buy such one

So you're assuming that the OP can't or won't be upgrading in the future?

People can buy fish grow them in xxx size tank and then move them to zzz sized tank?

I totally Agree Rob. It is also against my "religion" but what to do when I am a big fan of the Amazon but this very cool fish is from Africa...

Even though I have made a decision I probably have to sleep on it to make sure I choose the right thing.

Regarding the Tank size :-) It will be changed in time to a proper size tank

I had a 4-6" L190 with a large ornate for ages with no trouble, but I guess it will be down to the individual fish. Give it a try but keep a close eye on them. And be aware of the different growth rates too, could lead to trouble! I found bichirs will live with fish for a long time when well fed, but once starved for a few days....
David R's 2000L tank build - now up and running with fish and water and stuff, check it out!

My future tank is planned 260x80x80cm (1460 liters) Should be sufficient.
