I've heard these Cory's live in shalow water and can't be kept in deeper
aquariums because they are not able to reach the surface of the water soon enough to take "a breath".

How much of this is true?

I've been keeping Green lasers for about 5 years now. They live in a 40cm high tank without any problems. I would think that their natural habitat will be some what deeper then that. Main issue with these laser cory's is temperature. They don't do well in higher temperature. Mine are been kept on 24-26(summer temp) degrees. They also need a lot of hiding places and not to much light.

I have gold lasers or orange stripe whichever you prefer to call them.
They live well in a 2.5ft tank and have been in there a long time now at 27degrees :-)

There's two distinct types, CW10 is the gold lazer with very distinctive gold dorsal stripe. There are also plenty of CW23 doing the rounds, commonly called the orange lazer with a less distinct lazer stripe. Comparison of fry development has shown them to be different species, so best not to keep them together if you plan to breed.

There is a log of ground to cover with this post.

The question about the depth of water, this is something I have never come across in 40 years of Cory keeping and breeding and I would be interested to know where or who the idea came from. The species mentioned would not have any problem reaching the surface in several feet of water.

The species you mention "Gold laser" = CW010.

Gold stripe = (CW014 red stripe)CW23, both species have proven to be the same, the stripe darkens to a red orange over dark substrate. The stripe in these species starts strong at the head and fades toward the caudal fin, the strength and intensity of the stripe can be variable from specimen to specimen.

The "Gold line" is probably CW008 "Gold line elegans".

Another species that should be in the mix is C. schultzei Although it is still currently scientifically classed at a variation of C. aeneus, I along with several other Cory enthusiasts consider it good species in its own right.

On top of all the above there are several C. aeneus types that display what is commonly referred to as having a gold shoulder.

Well, it was new to me too, but was mentioned by an experienced fishkeeper who commented on the recent deaths of "goldlasers" of another fishkeeper I know.
His tank is 60 cm deep.
