What is my synodontis ?
I am having trouble identifing one of my syno's can anyone help please.
I think the black and white one is a syno granulosus but I am unsure on the pale spotted syno.

Re: What is my synodontis ?
The one on the left appears to be Synodontis Lucipinnis. It's definitely not Synodontis Granulosa. The other appears to be a hybrid.

Agreed, albeit IMHO better pics are needed for the Luci. The hybrid ID is more certain.

Re: What is my synodontis ?
I have to say, even with my limited knowledge of synos that the fish on the left is also a hybrid. The markings just don't look right to me IMO.

Re: What is my synodontis ?
The second picture looks to be a hybrid, the other is not clear enough to say for sure, definately not a granulosa though, first clue there is no white on the front of the dorsal on a real granny also spots are much too large with too much contrast.

Re: What is my synodontis ?
2nd pic looks like "S Jaguar", a recent hybrid produced in FL.
With the incredible array and beauty of Synodontis and the constant habitat destruction, the production of syno hybrids is a sad decision IMO.

Re: What is my synodontis ?
A better pic would help but i'm leaning towards hybrid for the fish in pic 1 on the left.

Re: What is my synodontis ?
The resolution isn't great i'm afraid.
The tanganyikan style look-a-like definately has lucipinnis/petricola in the mix so should be a smallish species maybe5/6" max but if it is indeed a hybrid it depends somewhat on the parentage. I suspect the other will go bigger, maybe 6/8".
Can i ask how much you paid for the tanganyikan style one? Hybrids are most often , but not always a fair bit cheaper than genuine species & also where you got it?

Re: What is my synodontis ?
Sorry about picture quality fish is always on the move.I bought both at the same time from a shop in clacton(uk) called reef2rainforest for £10 each. They told me that they cost that much because they was less than an inch in size and would cost around £50 each if they was bigger. They had them all in one tank but i suspect that is because it is a small shop with about ten tropical tanks but not sure they could have got them mixed I really dont no.

Re: What is my synodontis ?
If you want to buy properly labeled Synos, petricola and lucipinnis and granulosa in the UK I suggest you look here.
http://www.riftvalleycichlids.com/
Humm notice at the moment he has no lucipinnis but usualy has and for sure can get em both TB and WC.
Note the petricola are always WC. Like me, he has found no trust in the TB stuff sold as petricola. Nor the stuff sold as granulosa.
Sadly there is a lot of stuff sold in the UK as petricola and granulosa that is not. I dunno what they realy are.
I think you have lucipinnis and a hybrid but not 100% sure.
Note real granulosa cost about £150 not something you are likely to get by accident.
All the best James
