We have a yellow bullhead, about 20cm long, in a large (50g) tank with gravel at the bottom, and a plastic tunnel which I made for him. He seems to be doing well, but I suspect he is lonely/bored. Are there any suggestions on what might help? Another fish? Snails?

ps. he seems to respond to music -when I play acoustic guitar near his tank, he seems to perk up.

If you want tankmates, get some sunfish. You will need a larger tank, though.

Bullheads ( and many other cats) have exceptional hearing! they can hear almost anything going on outside the tank.

There was a famous research project somewhere in the 70's (if I'm not mistaken) where some scientist named two bullheads, a male (Adam) and a female (Eve).
they got trained to react on their name, showing up for food when called.

AFAIK the female caught on pretty quick, the male needed many more sessions

so you can have a lot of fun with yours, start going Pavlov on him, he won't be bored for long!

This sounds like a really interesting research project. Do you or anyonyone else know any more specifics like who conducted the research or where one may be able to look at the results of this research? I'd be interested to find out more.
