Hi on the look out for some Pseudohemiodon apithanos AKA "Chameleon Whiptails"

Their stocklist says "out of stock", but might be worth a call just in case?

If that species is suitable for requirements, then it might be worth dropping Jools a line, as he's got a prolific breeding group of them and might have some spare juveniles.

and though they are very nice, I was really after the true Chameleon..

Wow is all I can say - as usual Neil has a fantastic assortment of rare fishes.

It's like being in a candy shop, with only enough to buy some sherbet pips!! - rem them??

Well just for you kind folk who have replied to this, and especially Steve for pointing me in the right direction...

I have now got myself 8 Pseudohemiodon apithanos Yeh Woo Hoo !!! and just so my corys don't get upset - I bought a group of 5 Eques for good measure..
and for those who are interested .. Neil has just taken delivery of about 60 - 80 W/C L46 Zebs, and I think I heard mention that they will be approx. £350 a pair. Of Course I ordered 10 pairs .. . . . . . eh wat ? ? er woke up now! lol.

I would remove the slate or put two stones under it to keep off the sand and allow the fish to bury in the sand under the cover of the new shelter. Floating plants (Wysteria is a good one) will provide cover and diffuse the brighness of the tank. In nature leaf litter would give them cover but this is hard to work with unless the fish are established.

What are you feeding?

Last night I added a heater and an airstone for extra circulation..

The whips are nearly all just under the surface of the sand, I have tried live bloodworm ( small ) and also added some micro worm in the hope that they will be attracted to the movement. I have seen a little activity but not hugely so.

Added frozen cyclops last night, which is what Neil was feeding and also some decapsulated shrimp eggs.

Probably doing it all wrong, any help in this area would be good as I don't want to loose these. Temp currently at 74 / 75. Fair current with power filter in place.

Shall raise the slate as suggested Jools, and give them some shelter, I have plenty of duck weed which I can add for shading if you think this may help?

74F to 75F seems a bit on the chilly side to me. I would gradually raise it up to 81F.

Probably doing it all wrong, any help in this area would be good as I don't want to loose these.

The worst thing you can probably do is pile loads of different foods in to get them eating something. Water quality can slide quickly this way. I still do it when I buy fish though, even though I know better!

Also, is there lighting on the tank? I would kill that for a while, until they are settled in.

I have no lighting in the tank as I have a clear roof, so I have partly covered the tank with a towel.

I have added some duck weed to half the tank, which if nothing else will help with the nitrate cycle.

Tomorrow I will increase the temperature and do a 30% water change and syphon any uneaten food. Slate has been raised and cover provided, lost another tonight so not doing to well with these beauties.

It gets disheartening when you think that they have come all the way from Peru in the conditions that they must have been packed in, just to go die on you when you put them into a new home!?

How new is the new home - just checking this isn't a new tank? Agree with Rupert about the temp, although 78F is OK for them, 81F seems like a good idea if an airstone is present. It's all about making the changes slowly mind you.

I meant in the sense new to them.

The tank has been running for about 6 weeks fully set up. I could have put them into an old tank which is two years running, but it has gravel rather than sand, and I was told they like to bury. The only change I have made is to put the airstone in to give extra circulation. Just as a matter Jools, are you still keeping the marbled Chameleon? and if so do you still feed Discus tablets? Do you use any live foods? and have you had any success with breeding them?

Pier still has 5 adults? 4 - 5 inch labelled up as Chameleon, but he says they are the marbled variety.

Hard to say if I have lost any more today, as they are mostly under cover and I am not wanting to deliberately disturb them.

I got a breeding group from Racoll and I've bred them for a few years now. I currently have four grandchildren growing on in a large tank with other congeners. As they were given to me (and at the time I had them coming out of my ears, I gave the parents to a young fishkeeper who is doing a great job of flooding the market). Offspring have gone to the USA, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Austria and the Netherlands - so I've done my bit for the species! They get and will eat a bit of frozen food but are perfectly happen on discus granules. I used to used Tetra prima, but even slightly overfeeding young fish can kill them (it expands in their stomachs) I find the equivalent JBL product a perfect staple.

I've seen them I think and I agree. I nearly bought some to add fresh blood to the group.
