Re: Mekong fish atlas
I just recieved my copy of Fishes Of The Greater Mekong Ecosystem With Species List And Photographic Atlas. 8 1/2" by 11 " and approx. 5/8" thick. An interesting soft cover book with 2,541 color photographs of fresh, brackish, and marine fishes found within the greater Mekong River, its extensive estuary/delta, and marine habitats that radiate out from the estuary/delta. Needless to say, there are hundreds of images of purely marine fish in this publication. The cover is indirectly misleading, with 16 photos of fish displayed being freshwater, and with two being brackish - there are no images of marine fish on the cover, and the lengthy title does not unequivically state thus. Either way, a nice book with many images. A total of 293 pages, with the first 51 pages consisting of text, while pages 55 through 172 lists species categorized by families, and later on in alphabetical order, and pages 174 through 293 consisting of 121 plates with 21 photos per plate. The images are arranged from top to bottom, from the left column to the right column, a somewhat unusual arrangement in my opinion.
There are 156 images of catfish, both fresh and salt included. Most of the images are Dr. Kottelot-style (many are undoubtely his) but the quality of most of the images are slightly fuzzy, and not crip. There is no information on any species whatsoever in terms of habitat, diet, reproduction, etc. However, the real strength of this publication is in its vast quantity of images of freshwater and brackish water fishes (and to a much lesser degree, the marine fishes) from this part of the world.
Not a bad book for only $35 US dollars. I paid $5 shipping within the US and am not sure the shipping costs out of country.
