Compatibility of different pleco species

Post by pete »

Am I right in thinking that different species of pleco get along OK, it is only when you add two the same such as two panques that they may fight,
I have one tank with a 5 inch gibbiceps and a 2 inch panque they get along well and will even share the same bogwood ( there are 4 picies of wood in the tank so have got lots of hiding places.)
the other tank has a gold nugget and a clown plec (both 2 inches) they dont fight but wont share the same spot one chases the other off .
will they still get on when they are fully grown ?

not quite that simple, they each need there own territory in some cases however you can use size as a indicator, and then again sometimes you can't. Best to research first so you can get an idea of what the compatibility is like with each individual species.

depends on the size of the tank

Ive found that whenever my gibbiceps is in a tank with a pleco of similiar size, he becomes quite bossy and will chase (sometimes relentlessly!) the other pleco of the same size. He doesn't bother plecos smaller or larger than him though.
