The catfish Charlie, and catfish people vs catfish density
Hi!
I'm Bjorn. I'm norwegian, new to the group, but got my first aquarium experience with small Eels (our native species)25 years ago, at the age of 10. I'm not very much into cats, but I'm really fond of fish! Thats why catfish!
Interesting theory this "The total number of catfish keepers in any given area is inversely proportionate to the number of individual catfish occuring in the wild in that area." as some in the group wrote...
No native catfish species in Norway...
So I moved to Sweden; here it is at least 1 (one!) species of catfish, namely the European Catfish, weighing up to more than 300 pounds/150 metric kilos. It would actually be able to SWALLOW all my aquarias just like we eat like.. chips?!
The only "wild-living" catfish I've heard of in Oslo, Norway was the small north american catfish Charlie, living in one of my friends aquariums. To make the story shorter, Charlie grew up very very fast, with fewer and fewer other tankmates... his friends for dinner, etc... He was then more than half a kilo, and needed a more luxurious housing.
He was released into a small troutlake close to the coast, that he would shurely like.
The year after, another friend, working in a sportfishing store, tells me that a heavily breathing sportfisherman had run into the store, and bought lots of brand new fishing equipment, because he had caught this catfish in this lake, and should use the next weekends fishing for catfish... luckily these fishermen practise the so called catch and release... He was so excited, that my friend didn't have the heart to destroy his joy and tell him he'd caught Charlie... Poor Charlie... probably this teached him a lesson not to chew on anything with a hook in it... (he probably doesnt like fishermen, or aquasodomites that a friend calls them..)
After this funny incident there has actually been released (by the government/county hatchery) catfish of this small species in a very few lakes in southern Norway, and they thrive! Don't know if they spawn there. They grow to maybe one kilo.
In my tanks there are cic-beep-beep-beep-ids (banned word I see..), shrimps, Rainbows and catfish; Corys and Banjos. And freshwater pufferfish. Other than aquatic stuff I grow the very opposite thing: cacti. Thats almost like the head in the freezer and the feet in the oven, but on an average it is quite enjoyable.
Best Fishes!

Even here in the Grand Ol' USA we all don't speak very good English. You'd be surprised by the amount of Spanish - only speaking people in the Southwestern US.Walter wrote:Well, Lion King ;) ,
In Austria most of the younger people are also able to speak English more or less well, but many of the older ones do not. And I know more than one "old and very experienced aquarist" ;)
Ahhh! Viennna. Birthplace of a wonderful lager style: Vienna Lager. As you can see the jealosy of your close proximatey to Vienna, Germany, Britain, and Belgium. The areas that such fine beer was made first and part of the reason that we aqaurists understand water hardness, pH, and enzymatic reactions!
Walter: Please drink one of the best beers that Vienna has to offer!
Sorry about my digression. It's just overpowering when I see beer and Catfishes join forces!
Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,
But the sort of beer called "Lager" ist not the best one. It´s mostly for export. The better ones are called "Helles", "Dunkles", "Pils", "Bock" or whatever, "Märzen" is also not that good. Don´t know, if they are also for export.
But you are right, things we are proud of in Austria is our good food, good beer, good wine and good coffee.
The English speaking part of the world is a little bit underdeveloped in these things, we say ;)
But don´t be sad, instead of this you have the better computers, the better hamburgers and the coolest skiing heroes (We like Bode Miller , and, for Great Britain, Eddy "the Eagle" Edwards ).
BTW: my favourite beer comes the same part of Austria as governer Terminator, from Steiermark, it´s called "Puntigamer Helles".
don´t know, if you´ve been already in Vienna, Austria or Germany.Beersnob wrote:Walter wrote:

Greetings! I am new to the forum & new to keeping fish. I have not set up my tank as of yet, want to learn a bit more before I start. I use to have a tank along ago, but never really did much to it.
In the past two years a good friend & fish lover shared Planet Catfish with me. I never knew that there were so many cats! In the past year I fell in love with the L046 & hope to have one in my new tank. I hope that I can get pointers from everyone here; would love to be successful in this new passion of mine.
Warmest regards,

Greetings from Istanbul, Turkey!
I'm one of the moderators of the forum of Istanbul Aquarium Club (it's a general aquarium forum - in Turkish - and i'm the moderator of the catfish part and a few some others). In Turkey, catfish are not so popular yet, so even me was able to be the moderator on this subject.
It will be better for me (and for the kind people trying to answer the questions) to post messages/ask questions only after I'm finished with reading all the planetcatfish forum, so see you a few months later!
Bye for now!
