Science News: Loricariidae - Chaetostoma yurubiense

Patrick Ceas and Lawrence Page have described a new Chaetostoma from the Aroa, Urama, and Yaracuy river systems in Venezuela. Chaetostoma are found in the mountain and foothill streams of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. There are currently about forty recognized species in the genus. With the exception of Chaetostoma jegui [Rapp Py-daniel, 1991] the most recently recognized species was in 1953. Most species in the genus were described in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The authors note that many of these descriptions are inadequate and the genus, as a whole, needs a lot of taxonomic work.

Among the species of Chaetostoma recognized from Venezuela are: C. anomalum, C. dorsale, C. dupouii, C. guairense, C. machiquense, C. milesi, C. nudirostre, C. pearsei, C. tachiraense, C. venezuelae, and C. stannii which occurs in the same habitat as C. yurubiense. Chaetostoma yurubiense is found in cobble and boulder riffles in cool, clear upland headwaters and small creeks. Chaetostoma yurubiense appears to occupy the slower riffles while C. stanniioccupies the faster waters. Pictures of both species are in the paper. Also included in the paper is a useful guide for identifying the various Venezuelan species.
