Need a Ph of 8,5'ish
Two questions:
Will a huge turnover (20 times an hour) and lots of airation (2 powerheads with venting)make it possible to reach Ph of 8,5. If not I will have to add chalk i guess.
How do I measure conductivity?

HI!
Well it will highly depend on how hard or soft the water is, but if you have a turn over rate of 20 times the volume per hour and you have venturi system you should get really close to the wanted PH!
You can measure conductivty with a conductivitymeter which consits of a sonde, you can find these in any good shop! It is a must have , more the PH one!
Cheers

Hi chill...
I have been in Norway a couple of times and what I can remember is that your water are very soft and humid but maybe it depends where in Norway you live.
If it's like that you will not reach above 7,5 in pH only with airation and hevily circulation so you get the answer by your self...chalk.
In Sweden we normaly dont have that kind of problem because our water is normaly hard and have a pH at 8, so I use a conductivitymeter when I blend my tapwater with RO-water that I use to breed my catfish.

Make sure the fish you are buying have come from a ph as high as this in the first place. New fish acquired will otherwise die very quickly. From the ph you are trying to obtain I presume you are possibly looking to keep rift fish. In tanks were we set up biotypes like this we use coral sand to help mantain the mineral content of the water, in a mixed substrate.

hehe, I was going to try very hard to not go there, but you beat me to it Caol_ila
The addition of some crushed coral in your filter would push your pH and kH up, and make for a nice stable water parameter for your fish. Can I ask what fish you are going to be keeping that requires the pH that high? I keep tanganyikan cichlids that spawn and grow out quite nicely at 7.8 -8.0, even though their endemic water source is more basic, (above 9).

Hi!
The problem with adding coral or any stuff in ther to bring the PH higher to what it is will also have an influence on the hardness and on the conductivity of the water, maybe to level a bit too high, which could cause eclosion problem for the Fry!
Have you try injecting O2 ( not CO2)...
I would also like to know what are the parameters of the water you working with...
Cheers

Hi Chill!
Is this parameter right out of the tape system or coming from the tank already???
If out of the tape system you shall be able to bring it to a higher level with good oxygenation.
If already from the tank, a little bit of crush coral could do it!
Cheers

I make you laugh anyway
So it can be sometimes when you not remember the right word...but it was not so difficult, we use the same word in swedish...humus...
I hope my water is humid too...in other cases my fishes will not be happy

Do they have conductivitymeter at claesohlson?
No they dont have any there, but you can find them here: http://www.makab.se
I have this one and it's very useful, both uS and pH and easy to use. http://www.makab.se/order/index.asp?cat=6
