What was your first catfish and year?

All,

Reading this post by Bas Pels, it dawned on me that there might be an interesting topic on working out what our first catfishes were. Maybe if this one runs I will start another alternative thread entitled, "What was the dumbest fish I ever bought". Anyway, back to first catfish:

My first was , 1977, the year Star Wars came out!

An albino Clarius, bought by friends of my parents at about 1" long and it soon began to grow, eating anything else in site. I started off with an iron framed tank! That was about 1979-80.

my first one was a in about 1994 (or 95.. cannot remember exactly how old I was.) He quickly outgrew my tank and is still living in the LFS's display tank to this day (atleast that is what the owner states) and he was probably the dumbest one i bought too (only had a 20 gallon tank.)

I named him Sir Crocs.

Mine was a in 1995 as a present for being a page boy at a wedding, and it was earlier this year when he died. Sadly he spent most of his life in a 2ft tank and only his last few years being comfortable in a 5ft tank.

Hey neat topic!! My very first cat was an absolutely beautiful pimelodus Pictus! In 2011!! Haha I'm still a newbie!! But now I have 9 cats! And pimelodus species are still my favorite!

My first cat was a common bristlenoes in 2011.
I am now slightly obsessed with l number catfish and have 9 of them hopefully soon to be 12. It is safe to say I can blame my addiction on this website.

A when I was 5-ish, so 1983. I caught it in Lake Glenbawn "Glenbawn Dam" and insisted my Dad let me cart it the 3 1/2hrs and 290klms home and it lived in an old livestock water trough until I got my first real fish tank.

Thanks to that one individual fish I have never been able to eat them. Tandanus cats that is, all other local fish are fair game.

Corydoras aeneus. 1998. I bought them as small fish and they grew to an enormous size and spawned all the time. (my other "first fish" were tiger barbs and bala sharks)

As this topic is based on a remark I made about assuming most people would have started with Corydoras - this will not have been the case.

Hi!!

My first catfish cam with my first tank in 1995.
It was an Ancistrus sp along with 4 Corydoras araguaiensis
a year and so later I had my first catfish spawn with a spawn from my Ancistrus sp!!

Mate if it helps the first catfish I actually paid money for was 4 . I even went all out and bought some albino ones (3 maybe) about a year after I got the first 4. So you were sort of right for my case.

Hi,

my first catfishes were a pair of common Ancistrus (Yes, they DID spawn..).
Back in 1984 or 85, I was 4 or 5 years old; nobody remembers exactly when I got my first aquarium, just that it was before I went to school.

1970 Cory Aeneus x2. Had them for 5 years and 2 long distance moves.
My folks didn't think they would make the first move from Virginia to upstate New York. They never thought they'd live 2 years and make the second move to New Jersey.

Good thread. I'm not certain about the year, but it was probably around 1981 or 82. My recollection of what was indeed my first catfish is a little unclear, but it was either or, as I'm now finding out after all these years, . Alternatively, it could have been a that I caught in a stream off of a local lake. I don't exactly remember which came first.
