I got this guy free from someone when I picked up some other fish and he had no idea what kind of critter it is! And I'm terrible at identifying Is he just a common pleco?

On the balance of probability, this is a , but with abnormal markings. This species usually has squiggles rather than discrete dots, but they are bred in huge numbers and unusual specimens will crop up. It could just be a size thing too, as the dots will coalesce into lines as the fish gets older. How big is it?
However these markings do in theory fit with . That's very unlikely, but an outside chance. Don't rely on the live picture of too much though either, as I'm not convinced that is the right species for that picture.

It's about 6 inches long, I've only had it a short while, so haven't noticed any visible growth as of yet!

It does look like a common pleco.
