Pitbull Pleco sick or ready to spawn?

Post by Goobs »

Hi,

I'm not sure if one of my pitbull plecos is sick or not. Water perameters are all normal and i do about a 30% water change a week. The tank is about 160L. Hopefully you guys can tell from the pic.

Thanks

Ian

It would help to have more information, what is "normal" can you give the readings?

Temperature?

What foods?

Chaetostoma have been spawned in captivity...a forum search should bring up a few examples.

"Pitbull" = Parotocinclus jumbo or P. spilosoma and similar species. Chaetostoma are "Bulldog" plecos.

Several types of Parotocinclus has also been bred in captivity.

And yes, they are easily confused.

You should be able to tell from its behaviour if it is sick. A gravid fish will just be acting normally, but be fat.

I'm only calling it a 'Pitbull' because thats what it said on the tank at my LSF.

Its moving around a bit slower than the others but it is still moving around. Not just sitting in one spot as i'd expect a sick fish to do.

Birger
Ammonia - 0ppm
Nitrite - 0ppm
Nitrate - 5-10ppm
PH - 7.2
Temp - 24c

I've been doing 30% water changes weekly and have been using cold water. I read that this can cause the fish to spawn.

And I expect it is a , although with that belly, and not a "perfect" photo, it's hard to say. I doubt it is a as Birger confused it with (since it's often called Bulldog pleco, and Bulldog and Pitbull are quite similar).
