pseudacanthicus keepers... how are you keeping yours?
I'm wondering how you guys are keeping your pseudacanthicus species...
We all read they can fight, harm, kill each other.
So, do you keep them apart?
If you keep them together how has it worked out?
My 2 L273 are/were separated by a tank divider that raises about 1cm above the water line. I came home from work today to find one had joined the other I wasn't expecting that but both seem fine. I'm thinking separate before lights out... Advice please.

Not sure I can offer much advice, but do you know how the one came across to the other side?

Re: pseudacanthicus keepers... how are you keeping yours?
It went over the top Mats, there's no other way.
I've rearranged the tank. There are lots of open hiding places and cover, but no dead end where one might trap the other.
I've also removed the brycon because they're greedy and eat all the food.
The titanics are quite active, like they are enjoying their own company.

I'm still new with this genus, but recently got a small pair of L114. They fought for a couple days (split fins and some scratches on their sides) but have calmed down and seem to be able to get along amicably since. They're in a four foot tank with minimal decoration.

That's reassuring Larry, thank you.
I'm also 'learning' with medium-sized plecs. Introducing them to each other I'm guessing is a risky stage. Ideally I'd have at least 3 to put together, but its taken a long time finding 2

I have a "pair" of 114's, one is 6+ inches and the other is 4+ inches, I have kept them together in a 6x2x2 since they were 2 inches long with plenty of hidey holes and plenty of line of sight breaks, never had any issues except for fighting over prawns and mussels if I dont provide enough of each in seperate areas.

I keep my L114 in a 75g Tall with lots of driftwood to hide in. Only other inhabitants are a 5" and two 2" L91.

Re: pseudacanthicus keepers... how are you keeping yours?
If the female isn't gravid, there is no use in having a cave. I think mosth off the killings appears in the caves. So as long as shes not gravid, I don't use cave, cause they cant breed. The risk of the male killing her is not as high. They can become very agressive.
I only offer the male a gave when females seemes gravid...
Females and females can be agressive towards each others. Same with male and female... males and males are very agressive... If you have males, I wouldn't use caves at all...
I had a 28 cm male, killing a 38 cm male that was guarding eggs. He was killed over night by the smaller male that had been eating him from behind.
Same with the fry... I lost many fry caused by them killing each others... so separate them, giving them much space when they are about 2 cm/ 1 inch.
The fry isn't as sensitive as I aspekted at first... but gravel at the bottom seemes very important.

That's great reading... Thanks to all replies.
It's nice to have my suspicions confirmed.
Last night I decided to leave them together in the new tank set up. I left a night light on. This morning both looked happy enough. So I'll continue this arrangement and keep a close eye on them

Re: pseudacanthicus keepers... how are you keeping yours?
I've had 2 L114 and a L273 in a 125 gallon with lots of territory without problems. I lost one L114 and the L273 to a bacterial infection which ran through the tank this summer, and since then I've replaced the L273 with another but it's in it's own tank with some small Scobiancistrus, growing out.

Re: pseudacanthicus keepers... how are you keeping yours?
I keep a L025 with a L114, at the begin they fought often but now they looks almost peaceful. They lives in a 350Lt tank (150cm).
Re: pseudacanthicus keepers... how are you keeping yours?
My L600 trio are fine, 2f at 11" and 1male at 7", I added a L114 8" about a month ago and the male L600 keep trying to fight him. I have lots of caves and woods, getting more bamboos soon. Ill keep an eye make sure they wont kill each other. Females fight but not to a point of killing each other. Keep them on my 120
Re: pseudacanthicus keepers... how are you keeping yours?
I may be lucky, but I don't really have major issue with keeping mine together (for now).
There are some little fight for territories when I change the way the wood are placed, but nothing more. In my 125g tank, I have : L24 9", L25 4", L65 7", 2x L114 7-8". I also keep a 8" Adonis in the same tank.
Here is a picture of the setup :

Re: pseudacanthicus keepers... how are you keeping yours?
This is all great reading, very informative.
Chouin, looking at your tank filtration and water movement...
Is the blue sponge on the intake of an external filter? And to the right is a powerhead driven spongefilter? And also an additional circulating jet on the left?
With all that wood in the tank, do you suspect it forms part of their diet? I'm not suggesting they are wood-eaters like panaques... just wondering.
As well as prawns, mussels and carnivore tabs, what else are you all feeding your pseudacanthicus?

Re: pseudacanthicus keepers... how are you keeping yours?
I feed mine with nls 3mm pellets and the algae wafer is also taken readily in addition to the fresh "meaty" foods and I have seen them giving cucumber and bok choy the once over a few times.

Re: pseudacanthicus keepers... how are you keeping yours?
The wood is mainly for aquascaping, but some might eat some (Gold nugget, L128/L200 maybe ?), but not like panaque.
As for filtration, since it is overcrowded, I have :
- Canister Rena XP4 (with sponge on the intake to protect it from the fine sand)
- 2 Power Head (Hagen 402 and 70) with 4 Hydro V Sponge Filter
- Circulating Pump Koralia 4 (will add a #3 soon)
- DIY 55g Wet/Dry with QuietOne 4000 return pump, info here in french http://forum.aquariophilieduquebec.org/ ... 19&t=14891
- Pentait FB600 Fluidized Bed Filter
I do 20-30g water change on tuesday and 30g on saturday.
(I clean the sponges each time from the Wet/Dry and PowerHead)
I feed them everyday (between 10-11pm) a mixte of :
- Wradley Algea Wafer
- Hikary Algea Wafer
- HBH Veggie Wafer
- OSI Shrimp Pellet
- Ken's Premier Meat & Spirulina Wafer
- Ken's Premium Veggie Stick
- Ken's Premier Earthworms Stick
- Ken's Premium Brine Shrimp Stick

Re: pseudacanthicus keepers... how are you keeping yours?
I keep many species of pseudacanthicus and don't separate any of the with any walls/dividers like you have.
I have the following species of pseuda: LDA105, L25, L24, L97, L273, L282, L600 & L114 and some all black ones. I have them in groups with their own species and each species is in a tank of at least 48"x18".
I have the odd fight once in a while, the L273 seem to be about the least aggressive as well as the LDA105 of what I have observed.
Give them space and a number of spots to hide and you won't have any issues. THey will sort their issues out if they have some in a day or so. The most fighting I have seen is between my group of 6 all black pseudas chewing in each other from time to time and the odd split fins.
And as you have found out, they all jump really well!!! Make sure you have tight fitting lids or you risk loosing them.

Chouin
Do you turn off the filters when feeding? I find that Ken's earthworm and brine shrimp sticks dissolve and get stirred up easily.

No, the current is not very strong in the front of tank where I drop the food.
With all the pleco in the tank, a couple of minutes and everythings gone !
