Help with Ancistrus ID please...

Post by Martin S »

Picked this up Saturday from a Maidenhead Aquatics, only remaining one in their tanks, and no price tag or any idea of what they were selling it as.
The markings are very honeycomb like, and what would be white on a 'standard' ancistrus is orange.

I know Ancistrus are notoriously difficult to ID, but was hoping, as it came from a chain store, this would hopefully limit the number of species it could be...or maybe not :-\

My immediate thought was , but when I look at our L309's, they don't match. How about ? (First picture doesn't look a good match, but second and maybe third does)

As does these:

Thanks Mats, and yes, I agree L089 is a distinct possibility. I will try and take a few more pictures as it settles in and maybe confirm the ID with some better pictures.

Would be a possibility?

Hi Richard
It maybe a possibility, but as stated above, I (maybe incorrectly) made the assumption that as it came from a chain (MA), it was never going to be anything that unusual. It's size is only about 2", so most probably has a bit of growing to do before I can determine it's sex.

MA gets many unusual fish, as they import directly from Brazil and Far East, as well as through transshippers (in Miami) and local suppliers (Neil Hardy for example), so there is really no telling what you may or may not get from their shops - remember the where available in MA (at least in the branch near me).

I didn't realise that Mats! And I'd love to get my hands on some more of those Imparfinis - they are great fish to keep! My batch came from Neil Hardy's via a LFS.

Yes, funnily enough i just looked back at my record for them and as I thought, you had them. Shame they were one of the fish you didn't get to move. :YMSIGH:
Will both have to remember to keep our eyes open for them.

Not sure if these will help confirm/change the current tentative ID of L089, but got a couple of shots of the underside, so thought I'd post them anyway:

Slightly OT, Martin. These pix are very nice, esp the second set and the third pic in the first set. Sadly, I can't help with ID but I will say I see some tiny bristles and the fish looks well-fed! :YMHUG:

Thanks - OT is fine with me :d
Am just getting to grips with my new camera, hopefully the pics will continue to improve!

I think it's almost definitely a female, and although she hasn't seemed to take any interest in algae wafers, as you say, is definitely looking well fed!

Thanks again

So nearly two years on and still not got round to confirming the ID! She (assuming a she based on the lack of bristles) was out tonight so grabbed a photo:

Hi,

certainly no Ancistrus sp. "Rio Tocantins".
We caught some Ancistrus in Rio Itaya (Peru) which looked very similar.
Image

Without catching location it will be very difficult to say something definite.

Cheers,

Hmmm not sure, but as we know without capture location, it's almost impossible...I just don't like not knowing for sure! @-) :))
