If this is from the CSG auction, I expect you'll mean (even if it's not exactly that species, general care is the same).

Hi,

I think you refer to Hemiloricaria lanceolata. This species is very easy to keep, omnivore but tends towards a herbivor diet. No special water needs. Caught it many times myself in Bolivia. Mostly hanging around in the limbs of trees which had been fallen into the water.

Glad I read this post as I had no idea that certain Rineloricaria had moved to Hemiloricaria. Is this a new genus? When was it erected?

I think Hemiloricaria was erected in about 1970-1980 something, but then someone lumped them all as Rineloricaria, and it was then accepted again sometime a year or two back.

Do you mean the Red Lizard or ? If so, I got 4 of these guys. I think there is a CotM article too. Great fish to keep, and easy as they are mostly farm bred I think.

Wee bit further back... Hemiloricaria was erected in 1862 for H. caracensis. The genus was valid until 1980 when Isbrucker treated Hemiloricaria as a synonym of Rineloricaria.

In 2001 Isbrucker (as part of the infamous "DATZ 14" article) changed his mind and revalidated Hemiloricaria (24 spp at that time) and Rineloricaria (18 spp at that time). He also erected Fonchiichthys and Leliella for three spp that had been included in Rineloricaria (Leliella heteroptera, Fonchiichthys rupestris, and F. uracantus).

In 2003 Ferraris included all genera and spp from Isbrucker 2001 in Rineloricaria.

In 2007 Ferraris spilt Rineloricaria into three genera. He revalidated Hemiloricaria and Fonchiichthys, but not Leliella.

In 2008 Rodriguez and Reis validated Rineloricaria and Hemiloricaria and gave characteristics that could be used to separate them. They deduced that Rineloricaria is distributed only along rio Paraná basin and Atlantic coastal drainages from Uruguay to Northeast of Brazil. Everything outside that area would fall under Hemiloricaria.

The cat-elog is not up to date with all of these changes.

Let's give factual answers and not guesses. There is enough bad information out there especially where these DATZ genera are involved.

Sorry, I was confusing the "merging it all to Rineloricaria". Should have looked it up...

As for the Cat-eLog, if you are not fixing it yourself, but have a good idea of what is out of date/incorrect, could you please post in the "Cat-eLog" forum so that we can track that it gets fixed eventually...

Do we go with Ferraris 2007 or Rodriguez and Reis 2008? We would need to check post-2008 descriptions to see which author is currently being followed.

I think, as a rule (but not without exception) we follow Catalog of Fishes. It runs a tiny bit behind the "latest" papers, but is pretty good at "averaging out the bumps", so when things change several times in a year, it's not actually changed until it settles down...

Ok, Hemiloricaria is now in line with Ferraris 2007, which seemed a good place to start. I'll move this conversation to a Cat-eLog thread.
