Loricaria (?) sp. Playa

Post by The.Dark.One »

Any ideas? The image of the whole length of the fish doesn't pick up how white this fish was.

Hi,

Limatulichthys griseus , I should write L. punctatus to be consistent with myself ;-).

Whilst I have no expertise in these, looking at the images on the page, the fish above has a much smaller 'bottom lip' than the images in the catelog page, and also the fish above has much more defined plating on it's chest than the images from the catelog page. Maybe i'm missing something more obvious, but that was just my initial observations.

Hi,

This is normal. The first specimen on the catelog is a small one if one considers the size of the head. The second one taken by Tiago is a breeding male. Males develop enlarged lips (like in Hemiodontichthys, Loricariichthys, Pseudoloriaria, and Furcodontichthys)when brooding eggs. The third picture can be a female or a not breeding male. So that's why you are surprised by the difference. The size of plates can be more variable, but Limatulichthys has well defined plates of medium size. Moreover the species is distributed all along the Amazon basin (and also in Orinoco). You can imagine that their is substantial variations between populations ;-).

Are you sure with the enlarged lower lips of Furcodontichthys novaesi? In contrast to the other namend this species has a strongly fringed lip structure.
Unfortunately this species is kept very rarely, so there is a lack of information.

Hi Norman,

In Furcodontichthys, fringed barbels are gathered at the lips' corner, and in the original description, Lucia mentioned enlarged lips in breeding males as in Hemiodontichthys.
