Similarly, because the orange-striped fins.
But, because the spots on it's body that do not resemble at all the spots on the Rio_ucayali,
I think it's not the same fish.
The fish was sold under the name L182, but it's not L182.

Thanks anyway. :)

Any chance you could figure out where it came from - at least what country it came out of?

There are MANY Ancistrus species - if you believe Shane Linder, several hundred species. Some species also appear to be fairly variable.

Hey Mats,
Tomorrow I'll try to see where the fish came from.
If I'm not mistaken, the fish came in a shipment from Colombia, but I'm not sure.

Only by the appearance of the fish (not including the location), which Ancistrus you think it is?

Not entirely sure. I was thinking Rio Ucayali before you said you don't think it's a match.

I am fairly confident this is . The ones pictured in the cat-elog have less orange/red in the fins than yours, but other pics of L309 online show this trait. Might be a juvenile vs adult coloration.

Shane, in your experience, do exporters in Colombia often sell "cheap" fish from Eastern Brazil? I can understand expensive/attractive fish like H. zebra or L24/L25, but Ancistrus that are a couple of dollars at the exporters doesn't seem to make sense to me.

Or are you saying L309 is not from Rio Tapajos?

No, not very often, but the Colombians do often act as transhippers for the overseas markets outside Europe, Japan, and the US. I saw this alot in Mexico and South Africa. These markets are so small that importers can't afford to order from numerous exporters in different countries, so they use transhippers. This is one possibility, but I also noted that the OP said,
If I'm not mistaken, the fish came in a shipment from Colombia, but I'm not sure.

Hey everyone, sorry for the delay in response.
Thank you Shane for trying to identify. ^:)^

After some inquiries, the fish actually came from Colombia,
at least that's what they told me at the store where I bought the fish.
The fish is similar to L309, I hope that this is indeed the fish, I think it's one of the most beautiful Ancistrus sp.

Anyway, when it becomes more mature, I will post here with new pictures.

Thanks

Hi!!

I wouldn't be so sure about it being "Ancistrus" sp L309.
L309 is a rather unique "Ancistrus" as it differ from all other described species by the presence of a bony plated nose vs fleshy nose he is also much higher bodied and bulkier build than the rest of the Ancistrus species.

Your fish has a similar pattern but a typical Ancistrus morphology

It could be judging by the location a juvenil form of this fish: L148

And if we talk about a fish that possibly could have been imported from Brasil, your fish would then fit much better this Ancistrus than L309:

Anyway...I would love to see him evoluate and reach adult colour...
Cheers

If the fish was indeed collected in Colombia, this is certainly the better bet.
