Eggs from Sturisoma or Hypoptopoma sp.?
This morning I found some eggs in my 1.60m tank.
Looking at the size of the eggs, then I think it is either from the Sturisoma festivum or from the Hypoptopoma sp. that I've got in this tank.
If the eggs are from the Sturisoma, wouldn't the male guard their eggs?
Are their any reports of Hypoptopoma's breeding in captivity?
Here are the pictures of the eggs:
What do you guys think if this?

Hypoptopoma I would think - it's hard to say what size they are from your photos, but the fact that they seem to be "all over the place", similar to Corydoras eggs would be.

Re: Eggs from Sturisoma or Hypoptopoma sp.?
Hi,
I think the eggs are from Hypoptopoma. Which species do you have? Right now I am not aware of any breeding report about this genus. Below are some pics of eggs of Sturisoma festivum. The male would guard the eggs and they normally put them all near together.

Re: Eggs from Sturisoma or Hypoptopoma sp.?
If I take a quick look at the eggs then they are approx 3mm big.
Because the eggs are all over the place makes me think they are from the Hypoptopoma's.
I'm not sure which species they are. The were called Hypoptopoma gulare in the fish store but some say it is the Hypoptopoma thoracatum. The three new species I got were called H. inexspectatum in the fish store.
Here are some photo's of the species that I got:

Congratulations!
Being a fellow keeper of Hypoptopoma (trio of sp.2... possibly), it would be awsome if these were Hypoptopoma eggs and you could journalise the fry's growth over time.

Thanks!
In the next few days I will hope to see from who these eggs are.
If got five Hypoptopoma species. Two are like the first photo and three are like the second photo. I had three of the first species but unfortunately one died.

Re: Eggs from Sturisoma or Hypoptopoma sp.?
The eggs were all gone after a few days. But this morning I found a couple Sturisoma laying their eggs on the window of my tank. This time the female is guarding the eggs instead of the male.

I think breeding Sturisoma is a great deal easier to do than breeding Hypoptopoma or Parotocinclus species.(Maybe P. jumbo are easier? I think the rest are going to prove to be difficult. I had one Parotocinclus cf. spilosoma fry appear in a group set up once but I never had them a controlled spawning set up.

Re: Eggs from Sturisoma or Hypoptopoma sp.?
We´ve got some pictures of eggs and frys from Parotocinclus haroldoi here and Parotocinclus sp. "Pernambuco" here. It is right that they behave like Corydoras and put their eggs just everywhere.apistomaster wrote:I had one Parotocinclus cf. spilosoma fry appear in a group set up once but I never had them a controlled spawning set up.

Hi Daniel,
This is the only photo I have of the group of Parotocinclus I liked and I have never been certain what it really was but it seems similar to your Parotocinclus sp. "Pernambuco".

Hi,
it looks like P. sp. "Pernambuco", yes. A comparable "species" is P. sp. "Recife" (pictures) but it seems that both are just local variants of Parotocinclus spilosoma.
Sorry, for invading the topic....

Re: Eggs from Sturisoma or Hypoptopoma sp.?
Thanks for sharing Daniel. Wish they were more commonly available as well as Nannoptopoma and Hypoptopoma species.

Hey,
over here they are available, much better than Nannoptopoma for example. I wish I could get some interesting Hypoptopoma, but no way....

In America the proprietor type fish shops have a hard time in face of the big pet warehouse chains and I think it has hurt the fish diversity we can find in the remaining shops.

Re: Eggs from Sturisoma or Hypoptopoma sp.?
The female has left the eggs after a few hours and the male didn't gaurd them for one day. This morning the male is starting to guard the eggs. How long will it take for the eggs start to hatch?
Here's a picture of the male and the eggs.

Re: Eggs from Sturisoma or Hypoptopoma sp.?
I get hatches at day eight at 84*F.
I wrote an article about how I raise mine and it is listed below my avatar as "My Articles" in Shane's World.
Their fry do not begin feeding immediately after hatches but begin within two days after they hatch.

Re: Eggs from Sturisoma or Hypoptopoma sp.?
The first eggs have hatched and I count 11 fry in the tank. I think these are from the first eggs of the couple. The male is still guarding the others eggs that won't take long to hatch. I count some 30 eggs that are almost ready to hatch.
