small males v's large females

Post by stumac »

Not really specific species but was curious to see what the thoughts were on smaller males trapping and or breeding with larger females, i appreciate that some sp. females may be larger naturally but am thinking more young adults where there could be as much as a couple inches of difference.

I'm not sure if this applies to ALL species, but my male bristlenose in my original breeding pair has been noticeably smaller than then female since I first got him. They are definitely grandparents several times over, and parents to a few hundred offspring (only a good month or so, I delivered 55 of their babies to a LFS).

It probably varies somewhat depending on how willing the female is, and whether the male needs to "force" the breeding a bit..

I personally would worry more about large males with smaller females, but I've heard that this works reasonably well too.
