Red Baby Whale Catfish? ( Important )

I have another topic going about my plans to get some Baby Whale catfish, but I started a new one as I was hoping to get a quick response, as the distributor has gotten them in but they are " Red ". I have only seen blue cats, are these just a type of morph? I'm fine with the color as long as its the same species.Thanks for the help

I wish you hadn't said that lol. The distributor is assuring me it is the same as the blue ones but just form another river. Decsions decsions.

Well, I can't say without seeing the fish, but those are sold as "red baby whale catfish".

From Peru?

Here is the name that is listed by the distriutor CETOPSIS CF. COECUTIENS "RIO AMAZONAS". The fish they have in are already over 2", I know it mentioned the Denticetopsis seducta only getting to be 2". I requested a pic, but the earliest they can give me one is after the weekend. I'd hate to order the worng fish as I have researhed these for a month or so now.

Any ideas folks? The distributor said that there are a few different types of morphs of this species, just from different areas of the river. Perhaps once I see a pic of what they have gotten in I'll know more. But I have looked everywhere on line for a " Red " Baby Whale catfish, but no luck.

Exporters and wholesalers often make up their own names for things if it's not got a widely used common name... So I'm not sure it's much point in trying to get the meaning to it. Ask Marc van Arc about the different names he has seen for various Auchenipteridae and larger Callichthyids...

Debating taxonomy with exporters isn't worth it. Most of them don't know every species, and if one fish looks just like another except for color they say it's the same species. If I had to guess, I would say it's some Denticetopsis sp. I've only seen Denticetopsis seducta before, but other species can get a bit larger.

Just a point on - it is from Rio Tapajos, so unlikely to be exported from Peru. Not impossible, but it's more likely to be a upper Amazon species.

The distributor mentioned that when the catfish are young they are more molted, which I am assuming would look just like Cetopsis sandrae. So from the verbal discription this cat fits best so far. I'm fine if the color is different, but what I want to make sure of is that either speices or color have the same requirments.

There isn't much info on their profile there, but would these guys have the same predatory means as the CETOPSIS COECUTIENS? These guys may work out better as the do not get as big, but I wanted a catfish that is active and fast moving, like the coecutiens. Does this active behavoir and feeding habits apply to all CETOPSIS?

I believed only Cetopsis coecutiens swims non stop and very active while the rest (those with live pic in cat elog) will just rest at the bottom. This is one thing you may ask the supplier.

I just recieved a pic from the distributor of the " Red Baby Whale Catfish " they got in. It is definatly Denticetopsis seducta by the looks of it. I can't figure out how to get the pic posted on here though.

I don't mind these catfish but the tank I would have to put them in is being held for Oil Woodcatfish and I was looking for something a bit more active.

If you can get enough of these , a breeding project in a small tank would be a most worthwhile investment.

Not may people can say they've bred a cetopsid!
