Synodontis panoy, Guinea Conakry.

Hello,

been some time since my last post . I'm dealing with exporter from Guinea right now (Conakry). Not easy task at all. But he have something he call Synodontis panoy. Any ideas what species this could be? I've asked for photos and locality of origin but it takes enormous effort to take something from him so not sure if I will receive any additional information, sadly. And I just totally have no information about "panoy" syno ;).
Could be something interesting! If anyone have any clues would be great to read them.

???

There is a river Pongo or Bakoy but no river Panoy (except in Scandanavia!) so that avenue seems dormant

But Guinea-Conakry is not in Lower Guinea (it's in Upper Guinea, or western Africa). It's more likely to be

Synodontis waterloti

(seems to be the most common syno exported from that area).

I agree, there seems to be some variation in fish that get called

Synodontis waterloti

could be one of these possible "variants"...there is really not many known choices specifically from this area in the geographic zone Upper Guinea, I am not sure they would be shipping fish in from other areas.

I have just done unpacking shipment. Those synos are super cool but don't look much like waterloti. However they are still in stress coloration so I will give them some time and then take photos.

I have also a second species which was sold as nigriventris (which is not for sure).

Some boring cichlids ;p and also super cool eels, looks like 2 different species as well.

this second species sold as nigriventris is probably waterloti. Probably because I have never ever seen synos in such a bad condition. They were kept without food for months. Probably were caughth and no one was willing to buy them. When I saw them first time I though this is Euchilichthys so imagine how thin they were. But are eating nicely now so should back to form in no time. This panoy synos have strange mouth. I don't know how to describe it, it is just not like in other synos. And the biggest is less than 5 cm TL. Will take photos as soon as they stop panick when I approach tank.

I emailed you the original description for Mochokiella paynei if it will help...there is a small section where Mochokiella, Microsynodontis and Synodontis are compared.

I don't think that pic is a mochokiella at all - a synodontis most likely

so there are probably more populations than just in Sierra Leone . Good to know.

As far as I know still just the one but it is not far, just a skip across the border into Sierra Leone from where they were shipped(Conakry), these are fairly small countries.
