Where did you catch this fish? I think it is Argentinian, and you collected it yourself?

Looks like H. margaritifier - and there aren't that many other large ones that have those colours and that sort of dorsal fin.

If the ID is correct would you consider letting those good pictures go into the Cat-eLog?

Re: IS THIS HYPOSTOMUS MARGARITIFER???
Well, there are about five, so I think we need a bit more info as while none of them are common imports, I don't think this fish has been exported, so it could be anything!MatsP wrote:Looks like H. margaritifier - and there aren't that many other large ones that have those colours and that sort of dorsal fin.
The size of the dorsal fin in a smaller fish like this one is tricky to gauge. In the head on shot this individual looks slender and so I'd put my guess at although it could well be .
Which river is it from? That'd narrow it down to (probably) a couple of species.

H. regani is indeed another options - which is also in the same general distribution (La Plata basin).

One thing to throw into the mix here, regarding catchment area.
H margaritifer and H regani was seperated by waterfalls along the river Parana, with H margaritifer being found above the falls and H regani below; however, In the later half of the last century due to water courses being changed by man, it may well be that the two species are now interbreeding.

Re: Is this Hypostomus margaritifer???
DoH!
I thought I was overlooking something.
Part of the answer was there to see, in this:
IMHO Even with the interference by man regarding altering the Paraná River course in Brazil; I would hazzard a guess that as yet any hybridisation between H margaritifer and H regani or hybrids of such have yet to get as far as Argentina; and it may well be that H margaritifer does not adapt well to the cooler temperatures of the Argentine Paraná River and therefore I think it would be safe to rule out your fish as being H margaritifer.

Part of the answer was there to see, in this:
As we know the Paraná River runs through Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. H margaritifer comes from the 'Upper Paraná River' drainage in Brazil. Your specimen, you say comes from the Paraná River in the Corrientes Province of Argentina. He was captured in the Paraná River, Corrientes Province

So, I take it your conclusion is that it's H. regani then, Mr. Taylor?

Hi MatsSo, I take it your conclusion is that it's H. regani then, Mr. Taylor?
I think that the catfish in question is more likely to be H regani than H margaritifer.

Re: Is this Hypostomus margaritifer???
For the morphological reasons I suggested above, and the fact I've seen these fishes side by side, I'd also go with H. regani.
