Help which one!

Post by olway »

I have just aquired a tank with a resident synodontis but I don't know what one it isI don't have a camera so I will do my best to discribe it.
Length=6in
girth=plump/fat!
color=uniform brown/black
eyes=med/large
tail=although distorted( :( ) I think it is lyre shapped and has faint spots.
dorsal=small(less than 1in)
personality=peaceful/lazy didn't even object to being netted!!
I have looked at the thumbnails on this site and think it might be pleurops but I'm not sure.
Can anyone point me in the right direction.

many thanks.

Sounds more like S. nigrita to me, as S. pleurops is not really a uniform color. Synodontis nigrita can sometimes appear more uniformly-colored when the spots are obscured.

Thanks Silurus. I have read the description and it does seem to be that one. My fish even has the tendancy to swim inverted! but it isn't as territorial as the decription suggests. Strange behaviour though, likes to get into the oddest spots to rest(ontop of the filter pump where it is almost out of the water and "twisted" upsidedown around some bog wood I have) :ohwell: Haven't seen it eat yet though any suggestions?

I have kept S. nigrita before and I have seen mine swim inverted (especially around shelters like inside a flowerpot).
They are not fussy eaters and will eat most anything. You might want to try brine shrimp or bloodworms first and then graduate towards pellets.
