Why do they not just post it on the net and people pay a user fee to look at it etc, instead of piblishing it ? I am sure there must be a way for a book that HAS already been translated to be available on the net ?

The main problem would be to prevent copyright abuse. I guess any secure approach would require a significant time/financial investment into their system*, and any non-secured solution would just lead to everyone sending electronic copies to each other and nobody paying for it.

* looking at their Web site, it's very basic.

Not on any entirely free platform that at least I am aware of. If the publisher is stopping short becuase of print run costs on this title, I don't see a business case for investing in an electronic distribution infrastructure / platform for this title.

That said, whacking it up as an eBook or Kindle download wouldn't cost very much, but would restrict readership to owners of those devices.

I just think that the German traditional publishing scene is so strong, that I don't see them moving to electronic distribution readily. That's a guess.

A while ago I saw a spanish english translater on the internet
it translated pages at a time .Might they have it in german?
I have not been able to find the site again .Maybe some one with more coumputer savy than me can find it.

Sad, I really whanted a translation cause my german is quite bad....

Pretty poor form IMO, last time I checked there was other countries than the US that spoke English, and with the massive increase in the keeping of catfish around the globe it seems silly to me for them not to go ahead.

That would feel right to me too, but off the back of sales of the first book (in English) it's not reality. Sadly, we are not buying enough books... Maybe that is not the whole picture, but it's part of it.

I don't know the sale figures for the first book, or the number they would need to sell of no.2 to defend publishing a translation, but given the species included in no.2 which are among the more popular ones compared to those in book 1, I believe they would sell more of book 2 than book 1

Actually, it is he reverse. There are lots of books on l-numbers but not so on the subjects of volume 1. There thinking being that Ingo's Back to Nature book rather filled the gap the larger book would. If not filled, then significantly dented sales at least.

As had been said before, but people have not been reading the whole thread, it has been translated, but is too big for publication in one book.

That would be breaking the law, since the original text is under copyright, and a translation is a form of "copy". Not to mention that electronic translation of this sort of text probably won't work well - I have tried translating spanish and portuguese/brazilian. Whilst you get MOST of the content, some of it will be gibberish.

Having actually translated similar articles using this method (legally) I am very sure you would not get a lot of the more technical words translated. Even the word for pleco, harnischwelse, doesn't work! It's a good way to improve your German and would work for small passages.

But then, I think you guys are missing the point, there IS an English version, it's just not slated for publication.

Yes Jools, that makes sense There certainly is a lot of good sources on the subject already, a.o. this very site. And Ingo has quite a few books out by now...Good thing I can read German quite well then

The Wels Vol.1 I purchased was somewhere around $55 American a few years ago. Volume 2 was more than that.

At risk of excessively repeating myself, I would definitely recommend people just buy the German version. It's worth it for the photos alone.

You can glean a lot of information from it, even without knowing any German, but with technology such as the Google Translate app, you can now translate from a photo of the text on your phone or tablet. Not a perfect translation, but you get the general idea.
