The definition of the word 'disaster'
Hi guys.
I guess this easter vacation turned to be really bad for me....I was off for four days and i got back finding this....
My big tank with my three pairs of P.Leopardus was a mess i really cannot understand what happened...
This is the original group i got back in 2008 and last year i had two egg clutches from two of the pairs but in that tank the eggs where eaten within a couple of days.
I had already prepared a new fishroom with tanks to separate the pairs but now it cannot happen...
Imagine that i found one pair dead in a cave.....
I don't know about you guys how you behave in such a disaster but i guess i am not in the mood for fishkeeping these days...
I wish this won't happen again o any of us...
here some pics...
Group shot.Ranging from 18cm (the smallest male on the left - this had lost his tail from a fight when i got them in 2008) to 24cm the biggets male.

Re: The definition of the word 'disaster'
Sorry to hear. So, I expect the pair in the cave died for some reason [injuries, getting stuck, or something?] and that caused the tank to go toxic?

This is the only reasonable conclusion as the most decayed fish was the trapped female. The first fish from the right in the group shot....

Sorry to hear of your loss. I think we have all been there and it's not a good feeling and can be quite discouraging.

Re: The definition of the word 'disaster'
A horrible experience. I understand it makes you wonder about keeping fish anymore....a little over a year ago I lost my entire breeding groups of L236 and L173 due to a power failure, they all froze to death. These things happen to all fishkeepers every now and then

Re: The definition of the word 'disaster'
Yes, this is horrible but it happens to us all. It's just about trying to get it right the next time. One spawn and you'll have more fishes than you lost. It will be really sore for weeks, but the best way to get over it is a success.

However, I have breeding colonies of both species' children from you. Re: The definition of the word 'disaster'
Im sorry for your losses. I left the hobby after loosing my prized male discus. he'd spawn regularly with two sisters. I lost him after he got his head wedged between two roots on a piece of driftwood. I heard some splashing the one night. I figured the cat jumped onto the tank as she often did and in the dark could see what he was panickingly running into. I know its gut wrenching now but if I were to have a redo, I wouldnt have gotten out of the hobby like I did. Gotta pick yourself up & start over.

Good to know, Jools. That might give me another reason to consider a trip to check out the whisky distilleries ;)Jools wrote:Yes, this is horrible but it happens to us all. But yes, the thing to do is start over and hope for the best. Luckily, we are mostly successful with our breeding attempts far more often than we experience accidents like this, right? Perhaps the thing is to try a different species, to get the motivation going again

Re: The definition of the word 'disaster'
Really sorry to hear about this buddy. I got wiped out over 300 fish in one hit ranging from juvies to breeding colonies and I was this close >< to selling ALL my stuff and packing it in, but I figured what the hell and jumped back on the horse, 4 months later I got a spawn from from new group of L002. Not a "glam" fish by any stretch of the imagination but it was a great boost.
I hope you too get back on and have some better luck in the future.
Regards,
Brett

Re: The definition of the word 'disaster'
This is a really sad thing
I really hope you restart your stock, people such as you are the inspiration for noobs like me to experiment and learn. I have personally learned so much from this site and others regarding fish keeping. I only wish I could breed any of my fish lol Seemingly my snails breed like wildfire but not my fish.
Without trying to sound patronising, keep the faith I guess
Best wishes

That's terrible and I hope you're doing better now.
But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I will be unique in all the world..... You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.

Re: The definition of the word 'disaster'
Two years ago when I lost my L260 colony I was very hard on myself about the tragedy. I think that it made it easier to recognize that with enough tanks and enough time, you are bound to eventually have what is a truly catastrophic loss. It doesn't make the loss seem any easier at the time though. You have my deepest condolences. I do not have L114 fry yet, but if you make it to this side of the big pond I can probably find some fry around here somewhere that you might enjoy ;).
