lower xingu has a square tail - this fish has a lyre tail of L400 or L399. I don't think it's 400, but 399 is a good possibility. Size matters, too. Smaller 400's are more sparsely spotted/striped and gain marks as they grow. It could even be L066 - they look very nicely marked as smaller fish and get the tight scribbles as adults.

What was it bought as, when, and from whom?

Hi,

Looks like L 66, hard to identify. The picture is too bad. In my opinion, Hypancistrus sp "lower xingu" is not a single variant. I know at least 4 different forms, all imported as "lower xingu". I think even "santarem" (now l-450) has been imported as "lower xingu".
