Help Wit IDing my newest pleco

Post by Ben »

Hey Folks,

I was just at my LFS today, and saw this fellow hiding in the back of a amall tank. I was immediately struck by his colouration. Not that it's the most vibrant, or colourfull cat in the sea, but in body it looked very much like Liposarcus pardalis in body, but nothing close to it in colouration.

Though it doesn't really come through that well in this pic (it was hastily taken, as he had finally gotten into decent position to shoot). but his lighter colour is a vibrandt golden, and his markings are quite distinct, and bold, not like what I am used to see on either Liposarcus pardalis or Hypostomus punctatus.

It is aproximately 15cm long (nose to tail) Fins are well shaped, fairly rounded. I hope to get a good short of it with extended fins soon.

Anyway, here it is, any thoughts? Image

HI!

Did you count how many rays on the dorsal fin?
He's body shape, colour and markings look like something between a Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps and a Liposarcus pardalis
Cheers

Don't see any difference between your fish and a gibby.

By gibby you are all correct! :) It certainly does look to be a Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps ! It actually didn't even cross my mind until you all pointed it out. Mainly I suppose because it's fin was lying quite flat in the store, and really isn't as tall as I have seen on adult gibbiceps. I assume, in sub-adulthood thier dorsal fin is not quite a pronounced as with adults.

Thanks all! Much appreciated!

Got more pics? This doesn't look quite right for me, too reticulated for a gibby. A belly shot would also help. Some of it looks like a young L1 if you tweak the colours a bit.

Jools, I'll try and take some more pics today when I get home. He's new in the tank, and hasn't gotten comfortable yet, so is quite shy. He seems to be making friends with my Royal, which is odd, as he's the boss of the tank.

DeLBoD, I really don't think it's Liposarcus pardalis, I had one of these for a long time, from fry to 9". (My Ex has him now) and they are really nothing alike in colouration, or markings. I admid the body shape fits, but that's about it...

DeLBoD,

What size was you common in that pic? Though I wouldn't rule it out as a possiblity, I still find that the markings are too well defined, very firm lines...if you follow. Also, the pic I posted doesn't show the colour all that well on mine, but the lighter "base" colour is a very rich golden colour. Like I said, it's certainly one of several possibilities. I might have put more weight on this option, were it not that he is already well above the size of my old Liposarcus pardalis had gained his adult colouration.

IMO, the markings on wrong for a pardalis, the pattern isn't quite right. Just thought I'd throw in my .02, for what its worth :) LOL
