Re: luci vs petricola
They could possibly be real petricola, the pictures are not real great and I would not want to lead you wrong...but the one has an absent window on the anal fin, the spots on the head could be right for petricola but the spots on the body not quite sure of.
Honestly I would not want to say for sure without a "good" side shot.

Re: luci vs petricola
Hopefully somebody can help me with this. I've heard mention of the "window" on the anal fin since the revision naming lucipinnis, but have never been able to identify what was being talked about. Is there a pic somewhere highlighting this or possibly anyone with good comparison pics? I'm not a serious Syno collector, but it is a bit frustrating as I've been reading as much as I can about lucipinnis since getting my pair.
Thanks,
Larry

more side shots like Birger says.
my lucipinnis
older shots from when i first got them, i have a bigger colony now in a bigger tank, i'll try to get some more shots, unknown if this helps. identified as Lucipinnis here.

Re: luci vs petricola
I have a hard time with this myself and to me it is not totally reliant and I would not use it on this basis alone to differentiate between the two species as it seems to vary a lot.pleco_breeder wrote:Hopefully somebody can help me with this. This is the way I see it...look at the anal fin here(and the dorsal) you will see an extra area of body color http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/im ... age_id=228
Then look at the anal fin on minifoots fish here Birger

Re: luci vs petricola
I would say these are Lucipinnis
this is based on them having larger irregular body blothes and appearing to be 'short' in body length. What size are these fish?
Are these the ones you have been breeding - i suspect if these are the ones that have provided you with 200 young (have i confused you with someone else?)then they are also likely to be lucipinnis as petricola produce much fewer young at each spawning (from what i've been told by NHA [commercial breeding])

Re: luci vs petricola
At 5 inches (TL?) Petricola would have many more smaller regular spots over the body

I'm not sure - it doesn't say how big that individual is!minifoot77 wrote:so is the ecat log wrong then? http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/im ... ge_id=4591
(Also, IMHO that is not the best example of a petricola - it is used to illustrate the unusual adipose and if DNA testing was used on all specimens labelled petricola i bet it would show that some are different, unknown/undescribed species)

Re: luci vs petricola
i understand i would love to get dna done and i think there are closer to four species that are labeled as petricola but i am not a scientist i think that i have two different species now (in separate tanks) and both were sold to me as petricola i will probably put them all in a species cup and post them here when i get a chance....
