Writing a long post.

I am having a hard time when i try to write a long post.
If i write a long post and fill the box that comes up to write in and keep writing, the box starts acting weird, it dosn't let me see the line i am writing, when i try to scroll down to the last line, it jumps back up to halfway through the paragraph, even after previewing, so you end up writing without being able to see what you are writing.
If you try writing a long post it you should see what i mean.

I have had this issue as well. Even worse, because internet here is not stable, I often write a long post, post it and then realize I am no longer connected to the site and lose what I wrote. The best solution I have found is to just write in wordpad or word and then paste the long post into the forum.

Hello,

My problem is I write too long of posts... (I'm working on shortening them up tho'). But in the mean time I've learned a couple tricks doing so. One is that you can use preview like a save... hit preview every now and then, you won't lose your work and you can always edit. The other, to address being unable to scroll down, is to place your salutation in place and then use your return to buy up the land below the border so to speak.

You just have to trick the system! Find the backdoors. Just wanted to share a couple friendly tips/tricks as it can be _so_ frustrating.

What web-browser are you using?

As suggested above, using a basic editor is one solution. But the editing on the forum should work too.

Obviously, we can't fix the problem for Shane, where the connection between the site and Shane's computer is lost - that's impossible to fix without working hard with the telecoms company in Uganda (and possibly other parts of Africa).

But for any other problem related to posting, we certainly will try to find a solution.

Two points of note.

If you click the browsers back button without doing anything else, you can get your words back and either submit again or copy and paste.

Clicking preview is the official way to resolve this issue. No matter how long a session last for it will always have an end.

The way I read it, the problem AndrewC reports is not the session timing out, but something going wrong with the editing box - which is why I asked what browser it is...

Hmmm, seems ok to me... Agree with Mats, we need to know specific operating system and browser versions please.

My desktop pc uses Windows Vista operating system and i use Internet Explorer for browsing, it should be the most up to date Internet Explorer as i always install microsofts updates.

It is not the editing box that acts weird for me, but the actual box you write in when posting, ie, the box i am using just now to reply to this post (or start a new topic).

Try writing a long post and also add some spaces between the words, so you have paragraphs and not just a long post, like i have done on this post, keep going until the writing at the top dissappears, this is when i find writing in the box starts acting weird.

Maybe it is just my pc, or a setting on it that is set wrong.
I will check with my laptop later, which has Windows 7 as an operating system, and i use Internet Explorer on that.
It is fine writing this, i am still inside the red box, and the tops words haven't dissappearing yet.

Could you try to take a screenshot (Hit PrtSc and then paste into paint, irfanview, photoshop or some such) and post it?

By the way "edit box" is the white text-box that you write a post into, so we're just talking about slightly different things.

I tried using my laptop and it was just the same as what happens with my desktop pc.
Maybe it is just my internet connection.

I was at the bottom of the page and hit enter twice to create a space and was going to paste in the new paragraph, but after hitting enter the second time, my viewing ended up a few paragraphs back instead of still at the end of what i was writing.
And when i scroll back down to the end of what i was writing, the cursor is in the right place for pasting, and when i paste again, it does the same thing again, and i have to scroll down to check the paragraph was pasted alright and to check that my cursor is still in the right place.

I have even had this happen with each letter i type when i keep writing, that is what i mean, sometimes i can't see what i'm writing, as the cursor is in the right place but a lot of the times my viewing ends up up the page a bit and not on the sentence i am writing.

I pressed enter twice and cursor jumped three spaces this time, it just acts weird the longer a post i write.

I now can't see what i'm writinfg without scrolling down the page.
If it's just my connection, no hassle, but i never had hassle like this before.

I just hit enter twice, and it's fine. I can swe what I'm typing. But if I preview, it will show the top of the text, I have to scroll to the bottom of the edit-box to make it work.

Question: Has it ALWAYS been like this, or has it changed?

[I have noticed that when chatting on Facebook, sometimes the chat-box gets out of sync, and doesn't show the latest text posted by the other person or by me - I need to manually scroll down - don't ask me why... but it seems similar...]

So, here I go testing this. I am going to write quite a lot in here and see where it gets me. What a bad typist I am. I am testing this on internet explorer 9, I don't appear to have any problem with firefox. Maybe I am just not understanding the issue.

It hasn't always been like this, i have noticed it more over the past three or four months.
I am not a regular poster so i can't be exact when it started happing.

Obviously, we can't fix the problem for Shane, where the connection between the site and Shane's computer is lost - that's impossible to fix without working hard with the telecoms company in Uganda (and possibly other parts of Africa).

Most of you would go nuts with my connection. Speed averages 50-60 kbs. Late at night I might get up to 90-100 kbs when no one else in town is awake.

I also pay internet per KB sent and received... and it must be pre-paid. If I run out of KBs while on the internet the whole thing shuts down and I have to drive to a shopping center about 4 kms away (hope they are open) and buy more internet so I can finish what I was working on. This is a real pain if downloading a file as you have to start all over again. It also means no one updates their software/firewalls/iTunes/etc as it would cost a fortune every month. I'll have to double check but I believe I am paying around US $50 per GB.

Also, I have two ISPs, both pre-paid, so that I can be somewhat sure of getting internet access through one or the other at any given time.

Jools and I have talked about this. A handful of rich countries are on Internet 3.0, but the vast majority of the world has barely gotten past dial up.

I wouldn't quite call it a handful, but Shane's exactly right about how far behind Africa is, the wikilink below shows this and is consistent with our access stats. I also believe, personally, that it plays a part in why we see fewer African fish and more Asian fishes in the hobby through the internet age.

Amazing that connectivity is so low in Nigeria given the number of e-mails I get everyday from there asking me to help recover someone's lost money

There is a great AFN (American Forces Network, the only TV we get) commercial on these days. It shows Phishers and 411 Scammers coming to a guy's door and asking him in person just what they ask for in e-mails. Really drives home how silly anyone would be to fall for these things if they happened in "real life."
Ever had your bank send a corporate VP to your house asking you to update your account info or a Nigerian buisinessman on your doorstep asking your help to recover millions held in escrow? You would not even open the door to these people.

What andrew describes is the perfect description of how this issue manifests itself.
I have had this issue for many years and it drives me mad.
In mucking around, just now to try and reproduce the issue I was maximising screens and stuff and when I activated the "compatibility view" button on the address bar in Internet Explorer, then the issue went away. If I turn it off then the issue comes back.
Andrew I notice on your screen shot that the compatibility view button / Icon is disabled. (The thing that looks like a torn document to the right of the box that the url: "http://www.planet......" is typed in).
I think that this will fix the issue if you click on that icon and put the page into compatibility view.
I am so happy that this has fixed it for me because now I can type those long posts more quickly.

Just to jump in I get the same issue with internet explorer. On a post longer than the type box the bottom line is always below the viewable area. If I scroll down to see the type the line jumps when I start typing and it goes back below the viewable area. I switched to firefox and no more problems.
