unknown catfish i.d please

I know the pictures are terrible but hope someone can make out what it is. The fish was going for $88singapore dollars and is roughly 6 inches long. Thx alot

Apart from the eys dont look right for a new world naked cat

At that size, I'd expect a Leiarius to have much more contrast in their markings. I could be wrong tho'.

Haha thanks for the quick replies guys , i know its a longshot but possible to determine the species? Im thinking of purchasing it so maybe there will be better pics on the way.would cephasilurus be considered an uncommon import?

I've seen them from time to time, so no, they are not considered uncommon here.

As to a more definite ID, better pics would be needed.

My guess, based on where they usually come from, is

Cephalosilurus fowleri

from Rio Sao Francisco in Brazil, or possibly

Cephalosilurus apurensis

from the Apure region in Venezuela (exported from Colombia).

The other two known species are from Suriname and Guyana, and although it's possible that they also exist in northern Brazil.

poor thing in such a tiny tank; at least they don't swim much, if not the least of almost any fish

definitely Cephalosilurus; I have three, not 100% sure who but sure they are fowleri and apurensis; bought them at ~12" for $75 (RiverWonders; shipped, shipping not included in this price) and $100 and $125 from SharkAquarium (greater NYC; picked up in person)

Very smart fish, interactive, fun. If you have the appropriate space, get them. They may grow to 2', though! Mine three are all in the 40' pond. They fought at first a bit, when they ran into each other but lately it's been a peaceful co-existence. Even feeding side-by-side. I am surprised (I've read they are almost incompatible).

I reviewed the Cat-eLog pics for the three C. species. Many pics of different species look very close to my ignorant eye. Big variations in coloration and pattern. Don't know how to distinguish just based on those pics. Either I need training (likely) or Cat-eLog and/or the science of taxonomy needs a future improvement.

Anyway, now I am not certain at all that I do not have a C. nigricaudus, so all I can say atm is that I have three Cephalosilurus. I know Cat-eLog sizes are 12", 16", and 14" but people wrote on PCF of 2' ones they have had. I can dig up one of my threads, if you'd like.

I agree that it's "in the same ballpark" - it's not bargain of the century, nor is it ridiculously expensive.

As to ID, I don't know what the keys from scientific standpoint is. Interestingly, two are described in the 1911-12, and the other two are 1974-78 range.

I haven't seen any real recent papers on this group at all.

I'm not sure, but I think "Grant S" in this case is Steven Grant, aka TheDarkOne on the forum. I could be wrong (I often am).
