Odd characin thread

As promised some snaps of this characin, Markiana nigripinnis. One even includes Auchenipterus nigripinnis (not related). Nice & lively fish, quick grower. The red in the fins is said to become more intense with age. Highly recommended to people who like unusual characins.

do the lil Auchenipterus mix up with them, now that the tank isn't so full of wood anymore?

they always kept to the front left corner, I hope they can use the entire tank now.

Moenkhausia agnesae. They resemble the Markiana a bit.

those Moenkhausia should be a perfect fit for the smallest Auchenipterid tank with the Tracheleiichthys and the Guyana Tatia's.......

True indeed, but I checked that list and couldn't find them.....

On a side note: these also remind me of Hollandichthys/Pseudochalceus multifasciatus.

I got these Moenkhausia agnesae in Belgium last wednesday. It is probably be the first time they are being kept here in the Netherlands.
They share their tank with Guianacara owroewefi, Brachyrhamdia marthae and Panaqua maccus.

It's a good thing that people keep rare characins! Hope they behave nicely.

Maybe Mergus was right after all. There is 1 Moenk controling the entire tank. All others are hiding behind the bogwood...Hope it is a temporary thing.Probably not though.


Here everything is still ok.

Let's just wait and see how things develop, but this is no good indication as you already implied yourself. Bad readers too these Moenks, because they should behave like that when fully grown....

Got a call from the LFS today:
Your fishes arrived.
- Which ones??
The ones you mentioned before Christmas.
- Did I?
Yes, but I have to warn you: they look odd, like flattened and rather ugly Hemigrammus pulcher....

Long story short: I now have a small group of 10 Gnathocharax steindachneri. Hope they will all survive, as some are rather skinny and most are pretty small, but it's a nice characin for sure.

Despite the grim looking teeth absolutely harmless.

In case you want to order: they (Ruinemans wholesaler) still have some odd(!) 100 specimens left.

Well: I walked in the LFS after work this afternoon and asked expectantly for the tank with the Gnathocharax.
No reaction.
The owner never heard of them: Not the shop I thought you bought them !

I did manage to see the fish he ordered from Peru :
Nice Hyphessobrycon erytrostigma (very colourfull)and: Hyphessobrycon loretoensis!

Also: Nannostomus mortenthaleri (9 euro 50 per fish)

+ Big Acanticus adonis and some very big Peckoltia vittata.

Marc, how is Gnathocharax doing?

Two of them were so skinny that they did not make it to the weekend.... The other 8 know by now how to evade the larger auchenipterids and eat like horses, so afaic they're doing fine.
Alas, like many characins not a true shoaler - at least not in these numbers.

Wrt Markiana: these eat even more and (thus) grow very fast. Once the (ex-feeders) Hemigrammus caudovittatus are removed, the colours of Markiana will be noticed much better. So far their red fins are no match for the quite brilliant orange of the caudovittatus.
