Poll: Time to get rid of the pl*co? (Please vote)

I propose that Planetcatfish removes the text filter which translates pleco to pl*co and cichlids to c******ds.

The origin of the filter was a humorous superstition on UseNet that writing the word "pleco" would jinx ones aquarium and cause ones plecos to die. I think the hobby has progressed sufficiently that we no longer fear our plecos will keel-over at the mention of a word, and that the filter can now be safely removed.

There is a FAQ about this.

You can switch it off in your control panel (disable word censoring).

Yes, I know. I propose to get rid of it completely, or at the very least default it to 'off'. It serves no purpose, only causes confusion and, occasionally, breaks posted URL's.

I certainly won't miss it, but then, the only loricariid I'm keeping at the moment is a common bristlenose, and I don't think it'll be a huge blow if he mysteriously goes belly up.

Mike, why not use the poll feature to see how much support this has?

maybe it should be just turned around

now the default setting is the asterisk in both pleco and cichlid

and those who aren't hardcore forumusers and forget about this thing can get into trouble when posting a link.

it's a small thing to set the default on NO asterisks in both pleco and cichlid; those who still like to have them can do so; for the regular but not experienced user and guests it's easier.

I totally disagree that it serves no purpose. It is a small idiosyncrasy that along with many others sets this site apart from the zillion other forum sites. It is a (small) part of the brand and it's a little bit of history from way back when, another thing many sites do not have and can not get or buy.

A poll I think?

It is the new users that have (the most) problems with this, so making it default as "off" would make those who are new users have less issues with it.

A good compromise, I think.

Edit: Jools, can you find out how many of the users have the word censoring enabled. It would also be interesting to see if there is any relationship between number of posts and on vs. off - say the proportion of 1000+ posts that have it enabled, compared to 100+, 200+ and 500+ posts? - what I'm saying, do people turn it off more the more they post on the forum?

I kind of like it because it is a quirky little thing that brings a smile when someone catches on.

I have nothing against Cichlids but I especially like that one for the response it gets.

Compared to many other questions that I have to answer over and over again, this is fairly easy! ;)

I'm more worried about the confusion that it creates than the answering of the question.

I would vote to keep it as it's part of the history AND when a newbie asks about it, we get to direct them to other pages which leads them to other pages etc.

Personally, if there was a way to fix this for URLs and images but keep in the text (if possible), I would like it kept. The way that it break URLs is the biggest downside to keeping "pl*co" in my mind.

Like I said last time this was brought up, links with pleco in the name are not translated to pl*co.
