Upside Down Asian Catfish

I just got one of these sold to me as a black lancer cat.

He is going into my 125 gallon tank and has shown no agression, but being only in there for like two hours, I'm thinking it will take two weeks to tell his true nature.

I can';t find much information on this fish other than it grows to about 10 inches long and will show agression towards anything of its own kind. It seems inquisitve and MAY bother slower moving fish.

That being said, could it be housed with...

Larger plecos (Tiger, blue phantom)?
An albino Senegal bichir? (already in the tank with him, they've been in each others faces with no backlashing from either side so far)
A synodontis Angelicus? (my main want for the tank, I'm really hopping there would be no problems. the LFS had this guy for 6 months and kept him with synos and said they never saw any problems with synos)

VJ: same here, including angelicus, euptera, soloni, and a great many others, purebreds and syno hybrids

How do you think this guy will be with full grown roseline sharks? I wanted those too but def. not going to happen if he cant get at them.

Tinfoil barbs or silver dollars were suggested tank mates, and I'm pretty sure my senegal and an angelicus will be no problem to roselines, but what about the asian upside down with Roselines?

also, he and the senegal are actually manding out just fine together right now in the same bogwood with the cat above the senegal just chilling :]

I had read that! i researched it on several different sites, and all info conflicted.

This of course is my number one source for catfish, and after 5 years I decided to join the website forums.
This catfish is very nice, I just wanted to know if it would be compatible with my senegal bichir who is longer in length than it (about 7 inches, the cat is 6), and with things like roseline sharks and synodontis angelicus

IME this fish can be trouble - harrassment of tankmates, shredded finnage when there are similar sized fishes that are unable to defend themselves properly. A big fat AUSD after a while with tankmates missing when added to general community tanks.

That said i do know of many people who have successfully mixed them without any problems at all.

The trick seems to be intelligent mixing of species - i think a birchir should be ok & an angelica can hold it's own easily but i would avoid bagrids, pims, woodcats, claroteids etc Also slower moving medium fishes, cichlids maybe as they can get hassled after lights out

that'd be me too but I agree with Richard's 1st paragraph - it CAN be trouble.

Used to keep 2 Mystus leucophasis a few years ago. Bought 'em as juveniles and they were extremely nasty to each. But I found this aggression reserved only for each other.

Keeping a 7" one at the moment and he s actually very 'tamed down' if thats the right word. He s at the receiving end now. Is getting really bothered by a Syno in the tank. Giving him away to a better home later this week.

This is only my experience though.Going by the general reviews other people have given here, I seem to have gotten the Gandhian Upside Down Catfish.

IME when there is limited space these are the sort of fish that get harrassed - obviously they are in direct competition for bottom space as a start but they don't defend themselves well either - for pims & bagrids i mean not the giants but stuff up to the foot long size, mystus, pimelodus etc

I have only one thing to say about this fish..... mental!!!! I've had mine a couple of years now and he is totally and utterly bonkers. Mine is in a 150 with an Oscar, JD, Ornate Bichir and Clown Loaches and I've never seen any problems between tankmates, except for the occasional snap from the JD when the AUSD goes "visiting" in her cave. He/she is extremely boisterous and very inquisitive, especially of fingers at meal times. Didn't take him/her long at all to figure out that fingers = food, and he'll follow my hands round the tank every time I do a gravel vac begging for shrimp. In fact, he's the only fish I have that seems to enjoy having hands in the tank to play with. Everyone else runs and hides when the syphon goes in....
