L255 sexing

Post by stensson »

Hi!

Could someone please try and give the right sex to this trio.
I were first sure that I had two males and one female, but now I´m not sure.
Could be three males?

I'm sure the one to the left (the bigger one) is a male. The one on in the middle looks prety much like a male too.
Both of these show thick pectoral fin rays with big odontodes, and clearly showing bigger spines under the gill covers.

That leaves the one on the right to be a female - but I'm not at all sure about that.

You have probobly right Mats, were hoping for different headshape for the one in the middle = female
But there is alot of odontodes on that one.

I think females have a double row of tentacles, whereas males have a triple (!) row of tentacles, as far as I know......

don't fix me on that count; I'm not that hardcore into the L numbers that I'm dead sure 100% on this; but it's what I've known for a while......

these ranunculus are very hard to sex though.

with this species a picture of the belly while it's grazing the glass is better! the shape of the papilla is different alright ;)

To help your English: the Swedish word "grossist" translates to "wholesaler".

Good luck with finding a female.

Fetched 2 more today.
Not sure at all at the sex
Leaning to males? the left ones seems to have fewer rows.
The camera is singing on the last verse , could´t zoom at all.

Nice picture of nice fish. I can't say for sure whether they are male or female tho'. Grow them out, and I'm sure it will become apparent - females will be fatter.
