What kind of ancistrus is this yellow spotted one?
What kind of ancistrus is this yellow spotted one?
We've got some kind of Ancistrus catfish here in the tank, but don't know exactly which one it is. We would like to find out to determine it's optimal living conditions.
It's dark brown/blackish with tiny, but many, yellow spots on it's body. Let me know if you need more info.
Thanks in advance!

I think that is L120 = L182 = Ancistrus sp.Rio Ucayali

Where on earth did you get that? These three are not the same species.claro wrote:I think that is L120 = L182 = Ancistrus sp.Rio Ucayali
I don't think it's Rio Ucayali. Is the belly dark and spotted or light without spots?
There are several species of Ancistrus that look like this. So I don't think we will be able to ID this one. When it comes to the Optimal living conditions that is not such a big deal. It should do fine when kept the same way a the common brown bristlenose.
Cheers,
Tina

Just found this ventral view photo which should help.sunfish wrote:I don't think it's Rio Ucayali. Is the belly dark and spotted or light without spots?

Hi,
can you tell me please what differences are between these "species", aside from habitat?

Hi Milan,
besides the one being from the Brazilian Guayanan border (Rio Branco) and the other one from Peru, Rio Ucayali, they differ significantly in juvenile coloration.
There are also differences in body shape, but that is easier to see if you have seen them both in real life.
Cheers, Sandor

@Gammell
Definitely not Rio Ucayali as they have a light, unpatterned belly.
I've got a pair (I hope) of Ancistrus that look very much like yours. They do well in tap water (medium soft, pH ~7, Temp ~26°C). Min are WC and came in as common brown bristlenose.

this Ancistrus is very mysterious. I bought them 10 years ago as Ancistrus hoplogenys, recently i found article that it isn´t A. hoplogenys but Ancistrus sp.Rio Ucayali and presently i see the same fishes described as L120 or L182 in Germany (Ancistrus sp.Rio Ucayali i didn´t find in Datenbank).
Do you have photos or link juvenile coloration with differences?
Finally i would like to know, what i have got really et home :

Re: What kind of ancistrus is this yellow spotted one?
more like L182 and L150,sorry I don't know a lot about pleco ,maybe I'm wrong
Re: What kind of ancistrus is this yellow spotted one?
I have always called this species Ancistrus sp. "Marble" L150
but I think others would call it Ancistrus L125.

Re: What kind of ancistrus is this yellow spotted one?
Well thanks for all your input. I've read your posts and several documents on this site and we'll just call it our ancistrus
This ancistrus have moved to our new tank with Trigonostigma Hengeli fish. It's kept on tapwater (pH 7.5) with temperature range of about 24-27 degrees Celcius. We occasionally feed it algae wafers but there's also bogwood and natural algae grow in the aquarium.
We've also bought another Ancistrus, which according to the store is Ancistrus Dolichopterus. It's an albino and it's seems happy in our goldfish tank. Definitely not very shy and can be seen both day and night (it does hide when too many people get too close of course It's kept at about 22 - 29 degrees Celcius (slow temperature changes though; pH again around 7.5). Ton of algae in the tank, so plenty of food.
Occasionally I try to feed it some cucumber or melon pieces but typically it ignores it, although the biggest problem are the goldfish which will raid any piece of food, driving the ancistrus away. They especially like the algae wafers
I'll keep trying fruit and vegetables which the goldfish sometimes ignore.
Any tips or tricks are welcome!
Thanks for your effort and sorry for the (very) late response.

Re: What kind of ancistrus is this yellow spotted one?
If it's albino, it's 99.9% sure to be - it's the most common bristlenose, and it's as far as I know the only one that comes in other than "natural" colours (aside from the very rare - and , which most likely is the same species as A. cf. cirrhosus).
As to feeding: It is can be difficult. I feed my plecos with courgette (zucchini for americans), and sweet potato. Both of these should be fairly difficult for a goldfish to actually eat much of, so should leave most of it for the Ancistrus. If you feed at night, it should also help the Ancistrus to get the food.
Another trick would be to place the food under/inside something that only the smaller Ancistrus can get to.

Oh alright But pretty much same care as the other Ancistrus right? Definitely albino (red eyes, white/yellow body). Brilliant animal in the sense that it's busy 100% of the time climbing our plants and stuff - very entertainingMatsP wrote:If it's albino, it's 99.9% sure to be - it's the most common bristlenose, and it's as far as I know the only one that comes in other than "natural" colours (aside from the very rare - and , which most likely is the same species as A. cf. cirrhosus).
Well, this aquarium is kept at the office, so I'm only there during the day.As to feeding: It is can be difficult. I feed my plecos with courgette (zucchini for americans), and sweet potato. Good tip. I'll see what I can constructAnother trick would be to place the food under/inside something that only the smaller Ancistrus can get to.

Obove pictures looks exactly as mine. bought as L059 (hoplogenys). I'm trying to breed them right now, ik have a couple and 1 i don't now for sure. I think it can be told for sure when i have juvenils and they have red fins i think as in the cat-elog
