In the US, are relatively easy to come across, but a bit larger than the size requested eventually. Also they're predatory little snots :p.

What about Acanthicus sp. (L193) or Acanthicus hystrix? They grow up to 60 cm SL and it is approximately 70 cm TL(28").

Onthe point of Hystrix I think you would be very lucky to see one.

The poster asked for species that are commonly available (presumably in California) - some of the species mentioned are illegal in the US and some are not exported. A couple a good retailer might be able to get.

So, I stick by my first reply.

I'd worry a little bit about the fact that these sizes MAY not be accurate - it's quite possible that these are "the biggest we've seen so far". Since these fish are pretty hard to distinguish when adult (because the spots go missing, and the capture location is not always known), any really large specimens that HAVE been found may be misidentified as A. adonis.

Mats, you are absolutely right:)
But in the other side, I know a lot of fish that their official maximum size from since book or resources much more shorter than their size in fact.
For example Gymnocephalus acerinus. Official max size = 20,3 cm. In fact I saw it more than 50 cm long.

Absolutely, and if it's a catfish, and there is good evidence (such as a photo with a ruler/tape-measure that is readable next to the fish or a reference to some good source on the internet, etc).

What about ? If I ever have a truely massive tank, that's what I would go for. Over here they are not impossible to get (though rather expensive). I have actually seen them in a "normal" shop.

edit
*how come I can't get a clog to link directly to the species?*

As to "ps": Because you didn't write the species name correctly. It needs to be EXACTLY right [easiest, and what I do, is to go to the relevant page and copy the CLOG-link at the lower part of the page].

In this case it must be like this:

Code: Select all

[clog]Pseudorinelepis sp(l095)[/clog]
You had

Code: Select all

[clog]Pseudorinelepis sp. (l095)[/clog]
It may be just a dot and a space, but it's more than enough to confuse the CLOG-link handling code (and that's definitely not something that is easy to fix - it is possible to make more intelligence into the code, but it wouldn't be comprehensive enough to make a big difference). It gets even more interesting when trying to link to some of the more exotic species, like "Ancistrus sp. rio ucayali" - I can't write that down without checking up on the species page.

OK, thanks. I never noticed the clog link before...

But it is rather confusing that you can't just copy what it says under 'scientific name' on the data sheet for the clog tag to work.

Yes, it's a bit annoying and confusing. It has to do with the fact that the way the database deals with spaces, punctuation, quotes and such things, and it's not so easy to "fix" that.

Sorry to derail the thread further, but sunfish may not be aware that you can now clog-link with simply the L number.

A great feature, and handy if you are in a rush or can't remember the spelling of the generic name.

Code: Select all

[clog]L095[/clog]

becomes ...
