C. Schultzei Black - strange skin disease - HELP!
1. Water parameters
a) 76°F
b) 6.8pH
c) 1dGH
d) 1dKH
e) 0 Ammonia, 5 Nitrate, 0 Nitrite levels.
f) 30% PWC once-twice weekly
2. Tank set up
a) 29g
b) Sub 1-3" play sand
c) penguin biowheel 200 HOB
d) well planted with swords, wisteria, pennywort, anubias, wendtiis + huge malaysian driftwood
e) 3 male black C schultzei, 5x 1" C sterbai, a 3" genuine SAE, a 2" bristlenose, 3 amano shrimp, 1 stowaway guppy fry, asst snails
f) Set up approx 6mths
3. Symptoms / Problem description
My female black C schultzei has been kinda hiding the last couple of weeks, today she appeared with blotches of paleness above her eyes and spreading back down her sides. My first thought was velvet as it appeared to shine under a flashlight but I think that may be because its light on a black fish. What it actually looks like is as if she is peeling after a bad sunburn, or like a clearcoat bubble on a black car. A strange description but that is exactly what it looks like. It is smooth, like cracked plastic, not fuzzy like fungus nor dusty.
Background: Approx 3 weeks ago my DIY CO2 bottle tipped over and emptied 1 liter of week-old yeast mixture into the tank while I was gone for 2 days. I removed all the plants, washed them off and performed multiple large water changes to clear it out. The biofilter didnt seem affected and there were no immediate fish casualties nor apparent distress. Upon returning from a trip this weekend my single 1" C. Leucomelas was dead with no obvious cause. My sterbai have stopped dancing against the glass (normally their favorite activity) and the bristlenose has had stress coloration on and off for the past week.
If anyone has a suggestion about what might be wrong with my beloved Betty or how to treat her I would love to hear it, (I think Mr. Frank Falcone might block my emails if I ask him any more questions ). My research hasnt turned up anything coming close to describing this problem.
Thanks
NOTE: The tiny white spots are on the container, not her skin

Greetings. Don't be silly. As long as you continue to Paypal me, I am always happy to answer your questions. lol.rhibear wrote: (I think Mr. Frank Falcone might block my emails if I ask him any more questions ).
I have a feeling that Melafix or Pimafix will be recommended, by some. I would avoid that course of action. My personal experience in treating a similar ailment, was not good.
I had a beautiful group of C. weitzmani that were treated for a condition that looks similar to what your fish appear to have. The aforementioned treatment resulted in finding the entire group dead in the AM. They looked as if they had "skin" and it was completely sloughed-off. Not a pretty sight.
I am loathe to recommend chemical treatments and have never seen this in the 25 or so specimens I have of this species. Personally, I would start with daily 30% water changes and a mild medication such as one of the "fungus-cure" treatments. That always seems to work for me, when I see something and start treatment early.
I'm sure that many recommendations will be forthcoming to assist you. I hope that one will help you to heal your fish.
Cheers. - Frank
I used to be schizophrenic, but we're OK now. At least that's what my dog is always telling me!

These were my thoughts as well when I first read this...if you treat with anything more extreme it will just cause more stress and they have been through enough already.

Re: C. Schultzei Black - strange skin disease - HELP!
Update: after trying a number of fungus medications (unable to find fungus cure specifically) nothing was helping and she wasnt eating a thing. My LFS gave me a $19 bottle of Ruby Reef - Rally. It was the only thing they had with acriflavin (similar to the active ingredient in fungus cure) also has a couple of other chemicals but i figured that if its "safe" for reefs, plants and inverts then it *probably* wont kill her. I was desperate at this point.
3 days later she looks like a new fish... okay, maybe not but her skin looks great!
Thanks so much Mr Falcone.
I've returned her to her pals in the hopes that she'll eat again soon.

Just bear in mind that most of the time, fish become ill because of something in their environment - so you may need to make more frequent water changes, or some such to keep your water quality up to scratch.

Re: C. Schultzei Black - strange skin disease - HELP!
I need my cats to not knock over my DIY CO2 bottle... I havent actually had it running since the incident, and wont until i get a cabinet to put the bottles in. I do 20-35% PWC twice weekly. I dont think I could handle much more often than that, but I did just see her eating again, I'm very relieved.
