I just added a link to Shane's article "In search of the worlds largest catfish" to the "What's the largest catfish?" question. That way people living in Asia or North America can find what fish is the biggest in their region...

Could you have a "hit count" next to that as well - that would help to indicate for instance which are "cullable" when it comes to removing old questions for example...

I put Cat-eLog links in the "What's the best algae-eater?" FAQ too... And a link to "feeding"...

I was about to write that I'd say that would be a V2 feature and FAQ V2 isn't planned for a while but then I realised it V1 has a "most popular" feature so it must already be counting them...

This didn't take long at all, what I've done is added "show all" links to the front page and they take you to full lists in the same format which has the information you want.

The name catfish comes from the whisker-like barbells.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I think it's already covered in this FAQ entry.

not to get sidetracked too badly, but I have to ask.

are those threadlike thingies on a catfish head called whiskers or barbells?

because I was pretty sure a 'barbell' was a big steel rod you use to attach big weights on and lift over your head......

and a whisker a hairy extension on an animals' head to feel around (like on a rodent or cat).

wich is the right one?
I usually stuck to whiskers in my descriptions because of the confusion with the bodybuilding equipment.....

It's a matter of spelling:

Barbel is the things that stick out of the head on a catfish.

Barbell is a weightlifting implement consisting of a rod with plates (or something looking like it for putting through your pierced body, if you're into that sort of thing)...

Note that first word is spelled with one L and the second word with two L's.

Whiskers isn't quite the same thing, but close enough that most people will fully understand what you mean (and certainly no risk of confusing it with a weigh lifiting or piercing parts...).

Q: When should I use private messages? When should I NOT use private messages?
A: Private messages are an excellent method to hold private conversations. Typical examples are to exchange telephone/e-mail/address information, which clearly is not to everyones interest (and most people don't want their telephone/e-maile/address known to "anyone").

You should not use private messages to ask general questions like "What do you think I should add to my tank?" or "I have a <something>, do you think [it is a male/female][can I breed it][is it going to eat my small fish][etc]?"

There are two reasons why such private messages are not such a good idea: There may be other people that could come up with a better answer, and there may be other people who are interested in the answer.

Any one else think I should "retire" the FAQ in its current format and move it all to forum posts?

Sounds good to me. What format did you have in mind? I can see a couple of "easy" options:
1. A new forum - possibly with fairly strict rules about posting?
2. A sticky topic in each forum [where relevant].

I think my main concern would be "how to organize it so that people can find stuff, and prevent the good answers from being lost in a mess of arbitrary discussion".

Either

a) A forum sticky with all the questions as links in the first post and then all the answers OR
b) A new forum with a post per question.

I think I will go with (a) or some variant. This is long overdue.

A new topic (probably an announcement) with all the 106 FAQ's, (each one is a link) and then a reply for each Answer to the FAQ link list in the same topic. Each FAQ links to each reply all in one topic. It is seachable, easy to navigate and can be administered easily by mods.

I could be persuaded to have two of them, one for forum stuff, one for fish stuff.

What d'ya think?

So, what you are saying is that in the topic, there will be a bunch of stuff looking like this

In post 33121:

Bingo. Or to be 100% clear,

Code: Select all

http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=x&t=y&p=z#z
, where only z will not remain constant. The more I think about it, the more I think there should be two, one tech, one fishy.

The reasons for not doing this (and doing it as a couple of big articles) are (a) google prefers articles and (b) I plan to to an "article parser" which will cross reference words in the glossary and provide tooltips for those terms on all articles. However, I'd better get the glossary admin fixed before I run with that!

No, moved it to resolved. It appears to have picked up a few random posts on the way? New suggestions for the FAQ (and Glossary) can be discussed as the need arises.
