Synodontis decorus with stripes?

Post by Barbapappa »

Hey all,

recently bought 2 (they didn't have any more) synodontis in a lfs.

After some searching the web I think they are s. decorus, I red some topics on hybrid syno's wich resemble decorus so I doubting if these are "the real deal".

They do have 6 wires under the mouth, 4 of wich have small side branches (sorry don't know the offical terminology). They don't have spots, but are more striped.

Anyway, I made this (terrible) picture when the biggest one (5") was still in the bag.

There eating very well and are losing there shyness already (got them last fryday) so I am happy with them anyway :D But hopefully someone can clear things up about wich species this is.

Your fish looks like a true to me. There is a striped form (check the Cat-eLog entry for a photo), and I guess there would be intermediates (which your fish resembles) between the normal spotted form and the striped form.

I think, but am not sure, that the trend with hybrids is to be more spotty than the other way around. For example, my hybrid does not have the stripes on the tail fin, but has spots there instead. The branching barbels I think is also a sign that this is a true decora.

Your fish is 100% genuine decora as far as i can see but it wouldn't hurt to have a look at a pic of the other individual (i have seen tanks of mixed genuine & hybrids :? )

When i find it, i have a thread on here with a pic of a hybrid decora or you could look at hybrid sp5 (although these are baby fish in the pics)

the pic in the photo from the post 5 Feb 6.50pm - look at the tail - lack of multiple barring - more like a tang multupunctata - definate hybrid along with body blotches that are really big spots...

Thanks for the info Richard! I found these two by accident in a tank full of "normal brown" syno's. The owner of the lfs got them without specificly ordering them, so they where only two, but they were cheap hehe :D . My guess would be that there wild fish, also because of the size difference in the two individuals. If I get the chance to make a picture of them again I will post it here. It will take a while I think, because the tank in very low light and offers a lot of hiding places.
