I'm not 100% sure, but given that the smaller fish is wider around the area just in front of the two ventral fins, and the larger is widest just behind the head, I'd say the smaller fish is a female and the larger is male.

They definitely is a pair. But they seems to be frighten from the "visible bar" across the shoulder when you took them out for photography.
