Re: ID of this catfish... help
It's an of some sort, but they are notoriously difficult to identify to species. is the most common species. It does not have an L-number. However, I am not sure that this is an A. cf. cirrhosus as it looks a little different to me...

Re: ID of this catfish... help
It is, as Milton says, an Ancistrus species. There are more than 100 of species, and nearly all of them have a brown base-colouration, along with lighter spots - they are among the most difficult fishes to identify. I don't think your fish is , but I'm not entirely sure what it may be - - however, that's not the ONLY species that it may be...
Edit: Larry seems to be more sure... However, don't be surprised if there are further comments in all sorts of different directions.

Re: ID of this catfish... help
Feel free to send them in if you think they are better than the ones we have. But we already have 12, so I'd have to add either four new ones, or replace existing ones.

I don't remember looking at that particular picture - but my point is more that if you do have pictures you think will make the site better, then please send them along - just bear in mind that the "bar" is set a bit higher when there are at least 12 images.Birger Amundsen wrote:Guess you`w seen them on FB.

Re: ID of this catfish... help
I think we all agree that it's an Ancistrus. However, I would not go so far as to say it's definitely A. sp. Rio Ucayali. It could be, but unless you know for sure that this fish (or its parents) was caught in Rio Ucayali you can't really say for sure.
Brownish with lighter dots is quite common. And in this picture at least there is relatively little contrast between the colour of the dots on the body and those in the fins. I personally would lean more towards "not A. sp. Rio Ucayali", but that's just a gut feeling.
