bronze corydoras laying eggs like crazy.
hi everyone,
im a member of tff, my username on there is also plecostomus-mad.
my corys are breeding like mad. i now have my second batch of eggs and the first batch have hatched, although i cant seem to see the fry.lol anyway im not expecting the first clutch to survive as i was not ready or setup for them. i wasnt trying to breed but it happened anyway.lol they started spawning when i fed them micro blood worm and did a 40% water change because i introduced some red eyed tetras. this seemed to get them going.
ive read on this forum about raising the fry etc but cant seem to find any info on the lighting. how much , if any, lighting do they need?
many thanks in advance
mark

Re: bronze corydoras laying eggs like crazy.
Corys, and many other fish, don't really need light at all - quite often they live in rivers that are almost entirely covered by trees and very little light actually hits the river itself. The lighting in aquariums is really just for the people owning the tank, rather than the benefit of the fish.
So a fry tank doesn't need any special lighting. If there is lights on the tank, then let it be like that. If not, then you don't need to arrange any.

Re: bronze corydoras laying eggs like crazy.
Sand, as long as it's in a thin layer, is definitely the most appropriate for corys.

Re: bronze corydoras laying eggs like crazy.
ive been pondering putting birthcontrol in the water (not seriously). my trilineatus are breeding machines right now. theyve been spawning about every 5 days for over a month now. this past week ive had 105 eggs hatch. another 3 dozen were laid yesterday.
ive got a ten gallon set up to grow them out. pool filter sand from the parent tank as a substrate and just a hang on back filter. theres a heater that keeps the temp at 78°F, the sand seems to be the thing. im having great growth and survival rates (my opinion) because of it. the fry have something to feed on without you having to put a TON of food in. its also nice because i work full time and dont have the time to do a lot of little feedings through out the day. but the fry all seem to have fat little bellies and grow like weeds

Re: bronze corydoras laying eggs like crazy.
thats cool.
my peppered corys have now started laying too
must be something in the water
my initial fry tank is a 30 x 15 x 12 rectangle tank. gravel substrate, no filter on at the moment but i just bought a algrade bio foam, air driven filter to use. my heater is set at 78f. if these fry do not survive i will strip it down and use a thin layer of sand. ive collected some more eggs and popped them into the filter plastic see through packaging, that is deep enough for the eggs ( about 3 1/2 inches ) and is floating in my main tank.
i now have about 30 fry and another 80ish eggs to hatch.

Re: bronze corydoras laying eggs like crazy.
i swear. im expecting the trilineatus to spawn today. they got a water top off 36 hours ago. they got blood worms last night. its pretty much a foregone conclusion. the 36 eggs i collected should be hatching on tuesday. so many fry. i love watching the newest fry reappear. as wigglers, they disappear for a couple of days, then magically reappear as tiny free swimming fry.
ps: ive been discovering that if i use my home made loach food (its just an omnivore food), my fry go NUTS for it and are growing like weeds! http://www.loaches.com/articles/home-co ... n-fishfood
