What BN is this?

Post by trebor69 »

Last year I ordered 2 trios of 213s. Well when the box arrived I did get one trio of 213s...the other 3 fish was a 'reverse trio' of whats in the pic.

This is a male...probably nearing 4 inches TL. I know it is only one pic...and not a great one at that. But can you tell what kind of BN this is from this pic?

Yes, it's being reduced by the site to prevent it from "going over the edge".

And I'm afraid it's unlikely that your fish will get a 100% identification - there are many different Ancistrus that look very similar.

Now, one thing we can do, is use logic to determine what it may be. If it came in with L213, it perhaps comes from the same river, Rio Tapajos. This is the list of currently known Ancistrus from Rio Tapajos.

ok thx Mat
I will try to get some better pics in the next few days.

I dont know if the color in the photo is showing true or not. The spots are a copper color. One distinct
thing that stands out to me is the row of larger spots along the top edge of the dorsal fin.

Following the logic that they came in with 213s so are likely to be from the same system...I looked at
the list you linked to.

These are definitely not Dolichopterus(L183). I have 30 of those. In fact a spawning pair of 183 is in
the tank right next to these mystery fish. They are for sure not the same.

L370 - they very strongly resemble the pics that PC has posted for L370. The same shape and color. When viewed from in front the leading ray in the dorsal is copper colored. The one thing that seems different is that white tip/corner to the tail. On mine it seems like it is kind of there but not nearly as pronounced as the pics on PC.

L071 - They do sort of resemble a couple of the images listed but I am very confused by this catelog. With 3 different L numbers and pics of what appears to be several different kinds of fish to me I dont know what to make of it.

The rest in that list I think are easy to rule out. So right now I am thinking they are L370. Hopefully I can get more/better pics and some others will chime in also.

thx!
