Post by Rita Aspevik »

This fish is nr.2 of 4, purchased as Peckoltia sp. Rio Itaya, also unlike the 3 other.

Aside from the slight problem that Rio Itaya is in Peru and Rio Meta is on the border between Colombia and Venezuela, I'd say L147 is kind of likely. They are fairly variable in pattern, so that makes it more difficult.

I agree with the others, it look very much like a L147.

Hi,

more as a general remark, just rediscovered this information in the back of my head and don´t know where else to put it:

I will use the genus Ancistomus in the following, because it makes it a little easier to put the train of thought down:
Since Armbrusters Revision of the genus Peckoltia I am having the feeling that the two specimens of P. furcata in that revision might represent two different species, one of them being a Peckoltia (and in that spirit, I would like to redirect you to the sister thread of this one; the holotype of P. furcata stems from the "Ucayali river basin" and appears to fit the fish in that other thread) the other one appearing more like an Ancistomus to me; this would then be the more recently caught specimen presented by Armbruster. That fish is reported to be caught in the Rio Itaya and, as stated, fits the "Ancistomus bill" better in my eyes.
Note also that H.-G. Evers some time ago (quite before the revision) introduced an Ancistomus from Peru, caught in the Rio Nanay. This one actually being the first Ancistomus (Ancistomus sp. "Rio Nanay") ever reported from Peru (to my and Hans´ knowledge). Unfortunately, there is only one picture openly available of that Ancistomus and it distantly resembles Hemiancistrus (Ancistomus) sabaji, if I remember correctly.
Now closing the argument: if we were to take the genus Ancistomus as valid, L 147 should belong to that genus.

Hence, it at least makes sence to assume that this fish really is from the Rio Itaya region, does fit the "Ancistomus bill" and we know that some Ancistomus type fishes are present in that area. Moreover, Ancistomus from that area can resemble Ancistomus found in completely different areas, just as Ancistomus sp. "Rio Nanay" resembles L 75/L 124 from the Colombian/Brazilian area.
There even is the faint possibility that one of these fishes (here or in the sister thread) fits to the fishes reported as Peckoltia furcata.

Still, this fish keeps making me think of L 147, no matter what.
In that sence: just trying to complicate things..

Cheers, Sandor

So pretty when young.....
Image
6-1/2" adult male L-147 above. Almost completely brown, except for the caudal and pectoral fins. The photo doesn't do his hairiness and plates justice. A regular Hoover vaccuum cleaner for a mouth. Amazing creature and a transformation to witness.

The L-387s are similar, but much shorter with a smaller mouth. They appear to be better at "rasping" than the L-147. They lose their color a tad, but nowhere near as much as the L-147.
