Got a free cat today but ID?

I would say P.Gracillus Or lanmai? (Sorry guys cannot find the correct spelling)

Although would agree does also look very similar to R. Quelen.
Only it doesnt look nearly thick enough or mottled enough in the Body to be R.Quelen.
Mine is / was allot more mottled & thicker set (Length to width ratio)

Having kept bot R quelen and P gracilis, I find it hard to make up my mint deciding between these

However, Rhamdia look round, while Pimelodella looks to be triangular - were one to make a cross section.

But I fail to see how a cross section of the question fish would look like, from the picture.

once the fish starts to grow, it's easy

Pimelodella gracilis is a very slender small fish; about 6-7" or so max, often smaller
Rhamdia quelen grows more than double that size......

another thing: the gracilis will keep the black stripe, Rhamdia quelen can turn to a brownish flecked fish without a stripe or with a very vague one.
adult quelen is a speckled fish. there's one in the catelog here:

Hi guys going by what ive seen on the net its not a quelen,as it has no specks on it at all and its around 11" if not bigger,i did find a pic on a german site which im 99% sure was the same cat but they and another site identified it as rhamdia purple?
And they had quelen on too so it was a different species to that,thanks for the help so far.

I hate to say it but I doubt you will ever get a good ID on this fish without exact collection data (and even then it might be very tough). There are a dozen or so described plain colored pims with a single dark lateral stripe and probably 20 more spp that have not been described (and that is a conservative estimate). Getting an ID on these spp is about like getting an ID on a brownish Ancistrus sp with no collection data.

In Sands CotW Vol 2 page 58d there is a VERY similar fish tentatively ID'd as Rhamdia Wagneri (an educated guess) - i'm not sure what current thinking is on the name of the species wagneri or the ID of the fish i mention?

I am not aware of any of these spp getting very large. In fact yours is about the larger I have seen.
