I really fancy getting some

Corydoras parallelus

, how available are they? What sort of price should I expect?

Greetings. I don't know about your side of the pond, but I believe there is only one person breeding them in the US and the only people who have them, obtained them from that person, as juveniles. I just ordered 8 - 1" juveniles at $35 US, each. A bargain at twice the price. - Frank

Well, I ashamed to say that I previously had a group of 8 juveniles, from the same breeder. During a period in which I was ill, I was not caring for them as I should and wound up losing 7 of the 8. - Frank

Consider that if Frank is paying $35 each for the fish, if the seller were to sell them to a shop for retail, they would end up around the $100 mark. Last time I checked, $100 made about £60. So you'd be looking at the better part of £300 for 5 fish.

I could be wrong but I am not aware of any commercial importation of this species. I believe they were brought back from a collection trip, spawned by the collector and then doled-out to a few select breeders.

Be advised, C133's are very similar looking and have started to be imported on a fairly regular basis.

Fair enough - I will try to find out some other way - it's just that I've got a somewhat mixed message from the Cat-eLog data. On the one hand, it lists the Type Location as "Rio Negro, Brazil". But the "Distribution" field says "Peru/Bolivia". Now that is a few hundred or thousand miles apart... Unlikely that BOTH are correct...

But thanks for not blowing smoke - I'd rather have a "I don't know" than something "Made up". Oh, and best of luck in keeping/breeding them!

Edit: I figure the problem is in our "Distribution", as both Catalog of Fishes and Fishbase agrees on "Rio Negro, Brazil". So I have amended that [will be visible as soon as Jools gets round to approving it].

If they end up being that price then I think they will be left on the 'shelf'. Im not too serious about getting them, I just liked the look of them and they look to get to a good size and dont mind higher temps. I really fancy some Brochis, for the size, but my tanks are too warm for them. I'll look at other big, higher temp corydoras.

Price for B Splendens does seem to vary from one store to the next & it does depend on the size of the specimens being offered for sale. As an example £3.50 each for little ones

As Richard says, price varies - mainly depending on the size of the fish [this is a side-effect of the fish being larger -> fewer fish in a bag from the exporter/wholesaler -> more overhead in shipping costs etc]. I've seen pricese from 3-4 quid up to about 20 quid each for quite large ones.

My B. splendens are in a 28'C tank, and have been at that temperature for at least 4 years now.

C. parallelus are being bred in Germany and the USA. Those in the US are F1 generation from the German breeder.

As far as I know there have not been any commercial imports of this species into the UK.

The true location for the species is: - Brazil, Est. Amazonas, Rio Içana, upper Rio Negro and probably only a few tributaries are the habitat of this rare species. It is occasionally sympatric with Corydoras incolicana.

Brochis are a whole new topic, They were originally described from Brazil, Rio Tocantins (type locality), Rio Paraguai near Caceres; Specimens are also being collected from Peru, Rio Ampiyacu, Rio Nanay, Rio Ucayali; Ecuador, Rio Napo, these are more likely to be the ones we see in the hobby today and are somewhat larger than the described specimens. There are also two more C. splendens look a likes from Bolivia CW034 & CW035.

Well, Birger. Someone recently contacted me about sending 10 of CW016 to Japan for $200 US, each. I'm not going to do it, but yes, suddenly I feel very wealthy. lol. - Frank
