Male Lower Xingu?

If you ordered these in bulk, it would be interesting to see how the rest of the batch looked to get a nice "average" look. If this is the only one, do you know the location or any other info?

I do have more but they are a bit smaller so I'm waiting for them to grow more, otherwise people will tell me... other ID numbers or to wait that is too young to tell for a few more months.

These guy is already breeding size close to 4" inches

All I know is that they come from Xingu river... as much as I would love to find out more info it is very limited to me unfortunately.

No L-number for this one, it's a quite nice species looking like a L66 but with nicer pattern and a light yellow ground colour.

Since L #'s are basically assignments based on location, look and morphology, you are probably best off just keeping the groups together from the same location and waiting to grow more out. I have a few groups like that, just keeping them in a "species" tank to get a better representation.

Everyone is telling me that have some fish similar but so far nobody has been able to post any pictures.

When it comes to all "species" from the lower xingu the location assignments don't work so good, and the problem that many look similar but obviously isn't... thay have been exported as a mix of species and still exported (smuggled) from Peru as a mix of species.

Everyone is telling me that have some fish similar but so far nobody has been able to post any pictures.

The problem still remains. We are told the fish came from a certain collection point and have no way of knowing if it is right. Also, in the current era of "creatively" moving fish from one spot to another we'll for sure never know where they really came from. Regardless, if someone else has fish that look similar to yours...[u]it does not matter[/u]. Keep them together as a group and work it out. From the collection photo some might argue you have 129's, 102's(on the standpipe), 316's, 173's, 307's, 199's (sorry for the #'s, that's how I know them). I know some may be too small to ID, but let's not post the one adult with a cool pattern and ask others to guess. Until we have a way to do genetic analysis on these secimens from similar locations, we, as hobbiests, will never know what we have.

Case in point, I have a group of what everyone years ago called 316's. I grouped them together because that's how they came in and they are spawning. The fry have really cool patterns, but until someone comes up with an alternate way of identifying these fish...to me, they are 316's.

I find your words some what discouraging in finding out more about species that we have not seen for a while.
I hope someone be willing to take a different perspective and try to compare the pictures to find out more about these beauties.

This is not a new specie and I'm not claiming that... I strongly believe these are lower xingu based on the location given which is simple "lower xingu" but even if we know for sure our catalog here does not have much information so it will be even harder. The picture I have attached belongs to our Lower Xingu catalog.

L129, L199: The location point is different and dorsal fin definitely bigger
L102, http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/sp ... ies_id=204 the color and body shape does not much my fish, this fish is black with while dots.
L316, L318 http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/sp ... es_id=1055 The black lines are thicker and the adult size does not much as it only reaches to 3.1 inches my fish is already almost 4"
L173 does not have yellow in his body as far as I know plus the body size only 3.1 inches
L307 I could not find any pictures of this guys.

They come from the xingu river as I only import fish from that location, in fact only from the lower Xingu and I follow the transportation process of the fish since they are in transit until they get to me.

Anyone else what to give it a try?

This one I know where it comes from, if I didn't know I would not giving the answer I gave.

I will try to take some time in the afternoon and take some pictures in the facility.

oh Janne ....

I had to flight to another state today for business and I have meetings all day... I can't hardly wait for some results. I wont be able to concentrate in my meetings or state focus, it is the feeling of your first high school love I am sure it also happens to other people. It is amazing how much do we get involved with this amazing creatures and how affect our lives. It is often said by friends and relatives, we care more for them than other things in life. it is ironical how we can start with one tank and end up with a garage full of them investing time, resources and money.

If you don't mind me asking you said "facility" I"m relatively new in these world and I have learned a lot in the last couple of months... certainly reading and studying.

What do you do over there?

We have a small problem to solve with these Hypancistrus sp. "Lower Xingu" before we can tell how many or few species they really are. They are a little stressed in the pictures because I had to take all the hidings away.

They do look different from my fish and the pictures of planet catfish I attached in this thread. They are very nice, but definitely a different lower xingu type then mine. I have attached some pictures in the water for better appreciation.

The pattern may be different but I'm quite sure both your fish and my fish comes from the same place, take some other photos of the other specimens you received and not only of this special beauty.

Yes, like all above pictured Hypancistrus species even yours. When I call someone lower xingu I really mean outside Belo Monte, geographical it's a very small area with an incredible diversity of Hypancistrus "species". I saved a bunch of them for 3 years ago before they no longer could be exported, unfortunatly most of them developed to males... typical and it's the same from the picture you put from the Cat-eLog above when they was small ~5 cm TL in average. Your particular specimen above with a very beautiful pattern was always offered to special customers in Japan and China at that time, 200-400$ each was the regular price.
