Hi,

according to the valid positive list, all Peckoltia species are allowed for export (they actually "always" were; most Hypancistrus and so on were simply exported as "Peckoltia such-and-such").
So at present, they are indeed legally exported.
No comment on a possible ban though, such rumors tend to pop up from time to time..

My understanding is the same as Borbi.
It would not surprise me if L134 do get protection since the list of truly attractive small plecos species from Brazil is now short.
Many importers seem to be rationed to a relatively small number per order. 12 to 25 because demand and supply are not in equilibrium. I have been told that exporters are charging US $12.50 each FOB. That is fairly expensive for a fish exporter's price.

No wonder the fish I see in the shops are quite expensive.

I have a list from an exporter in Bogota, and only a few species are more than $10 each - the reason they become much more expensive when they arrive at our shops is the cost of shipping, boxes, veterinary certificates, etc. Say for example we wanted to buy some small Hypostomus sp(L119) - they come in bags of about 100 fish. That bag will set us back $27. Then we need a box for the fish: $10. And a medical certificate: $50. And for a "no account" price on FedEx from Bogota to Dallas, TX (I just picked a place at random) the cost is $188. So our $27 fish have now added on about 10x the price in various other costs. Of course, shipping a large number of packets will probably not add another $188 per box.

There seem to be a lot about at the moment in the UK but they aren't one of the cheaper, small, L numbers

That is why the mark up on expensive fish is very low, basically barely enough to cover their costs.
It has to be made up by shipping in 1000's of Cardinals and similar small fish which can be packed 300 to 800 per box depending on whether they are single or double styro containers and their size and weight. A Cardinal Tetra may only cost US $0.06 in Bogata in box lots. Then they retail for about US $2.00 each.
Those who approach me to sell them my tank raised L134 want the same deal and I cannot afford to sell them that cheap because it takes me too long to raise them to 2 inches and feed and house them. It almost costs that much to raise them to a comparable size. And there is big difference in the loss rate between the wild fish and the tank raised fish which is passed on to consumers but not given any consideration when negotiating with a breeder.

, then the export position is unclear. Otherwise, the info above is clear.

I just picked up 19 wild caught fish from 2-3" for $300 in Dallas, TX. Guy had them for 3 months and need some cash. They are doing great and hope to have babies in a year or so. I had been looking at bringing in a box wholesale for about this price but would have had to deal with treating them and hoping for no losses. This worked out much better for me.
